Like so many other posts I've read, what started for me as a "soft spot" fix in the floor, has turned into rotted stingers and transom. I am in the teardown stage now. After reading several posts and looking at what I've got, I think I will attempt to cut out the transom from the inside. I've read that I should leave a 3" flange around the perimeter of the transom to maintain the strength at the corners. My question is, how do I insert the new transom piece if the hole that I've cut is smaller (because of the 3" flange around the perimeter) than what I'll be inserting? Also, am I crazy to think about doing this without removing the cap? Thank you.

Meant to mention that this is an IO boat with the integrated swim platform. Thankfully, despite the forms at the back of the boat, the transom piece is flat and relatively "simple" (if I dare use that word).

OK, I came across friscoboater's thread and this answers all of my questions. His boat is similar to mine so I plan to attack the same way. **GREAT** thread frisco...
