Hey everyone,

Getting ready to buy my first lake only boat for this coming summer.

I have come across a 1993 Cobalt 19' bowrider with a 4.3 v6 volvo 220hp with the dual prop set up, seats and interior are 100% and the boat has a total of 280 hours.
I am looking for everyones opinion, good or bad, pros or cons on this set up.
Check out the photos and let me know what you think of it.

Re: 1993 cobalt

I would say if the thing checks out good for structural integrity (no moisture, rot, etc) and the engine and outdrive checks out good, then you probably have a winner. Low hours on an older boat can mean that it was not used for several/many years, so ask questions and look for signs of long term storage, particularly if it was outside.

Looks pretty nice to me, although I could do without the tribal art on the sides. Check the normal used boat items: floor/transom rot, then engine/outdrive items (fluids/operation), then electrical components. If everything checks out, she looks like a good one from the outside. Make sure you check the hatches on the floor for the signs of moisture/rot.

I believe ill be paying 5500, haven't even seen the boat, done my inspection or anything. The records are available and I look forward to poking through them. Haulnazz I agree with you the tribal will be the first thing changed with the old heat gun, the two stripes tho I think would be nice and clean by themselves. Anybody have an opinion on the Volvo 4.3 vs the mercruiser 4.3?

Re: 1993 cobalt

The 'engine' part is the same between Mercruiser and Volvo Penta. So, the difference is in the outdrive. Both will be fine as long as they are in good condition.

It's a solid engine/drive platform. No real worries there. As usual, it's always better with a V8 in there, but the 4.3L isn't a terrible option. If everything is ship-shape, $5,500 is a great price on the boat, $5K is a almost a steal in my neck of woods for a Cobalt.

I have a 95 Lund Tyee 1850 with the 4.3 GS H.O, so the 4.3 has a little 4 barrel carb on top, and the Volvo Dup Prop drive. I absolutely love the combination!! If I'm going easy on it, I can easily plane the boat at just over 2K rpm. If I dump the throttle she'll plane in a couple seconds. The Volvo drive is awsome, smooth, and the duo prop really has traction in the water. 4 barrel wide open I can get just under 48 mph. I think you'll like it.
