Re: 1993 Evinrude 175 question

well looks like my testing was wrong... Its not the power pack...

I should have done this before but its my fault - need to check that optical eye sensor - well i tried to remove the center bolt in the timer wheel but it wouldnt budge and i was going to force it... So am i trying to take it off the correct way??

thanks!

Re: 1993 Evinrude 175 question

that wheel can get stuck, I broke one recently. I think it was $30 for a new one. I do not like OMCs use of lots of plastic, Could have made it out of steel and made a way to pull it in case it gets stuck, but They did not ask me so there ya go. Mercs and yamis seem to use way better metal in their motors and plastic parts do not break all to pieces on you as much. This is my main beef with omc,, o yea I despise the one piece lower cowls...I better stop the hate...LOL

u know sparkie - ur not the first one I've heard say this about the OMC parts but I sure am glad I have taken note of these complaints because I've been very meticulous when working on it and have taken extreme caution with the plastics so I make sure not to break anything - unfortunately I did break one of the tabs on the top cover over the powerpack and regulator but thats not a big deal...

Ok - how do u tell if the optical sensor is bad? - I got it off - broke the wheel cover thou but when I got the wheel cover off - one of the windows is broke right at the sensor - not sure if I did it trying to get it off or if it was already broke causing my problem.

Re: 1993 Evinrude 175 question

if you had no spark, you probably broke it getting it off. Be sure to clean the drive shaft very well before installing new wheel. maybe even sand it down just a little with a piece of emory cloth. The CDI trouble shooting guide even mentions the common breaking of the wheel tabs, OMC really dropped the ball on that one, that part should have be designed to be much more durable. I bet i have at least 3 broken plastic clips/parts on my motor and I am reasonably careful when working with them. I have not seen a way to test sensor. Have you gotten a DVA adapter to test voltage coming from stator? also have you tried disconnecting the 2 yellow wires going from stator to rectifier (should be a big black plastic plug connection) and see if spark returns? I would say eliminate kill switch, power pack, coils, stator, rectifier, then just replace the optical sensor

Re: 1993 Evinrude 175 question

yea I've already eliminated everything else so this has got to be it. I was just wondering if there was an obvious way to tell that the sensor was bad or just to go ahead and replace it. I'm sure I broke the tab when i tried to get the cover off so I'll just order both of them!
preciate the help sparkie!!

one last thing - for the sensor - should i order the sierra or CDI electronics one? either one of them replaces the one I have and only about $2 difference - so i would say this is probably preference - which one do you suggest?

I have never seen a optical eye go bad, I have seen plenty of packs and stators fail. You can test the sensor with a DVA meter as shown below but you will need to repair the sensor wheel first.

if your motor was getting no spark before, I do not think it was the timing wheel problem. I recommend CDI parts, they have very good customer support and will try to help you in a timely manner.
