I would check the compression and spark. You might want to think about replacing the water pump since it has been sitting for so long.

I am going to check the compression. What should it be?

I know both cylinders should be within 10%.

90+ would be good, i'd be checking spark too.

Compression-
I am going to check compression today and I was just planning on pulling the rope to check it, but on another thread I was reading that you need 5-10 full revolutions. Will I get that on one pull? If not can I just pull more than one time to achieve an accurate reading?

Spark-
My plan is to pull the plugs and then put them back in the wire and pull the rope to see spark. Is there a better way?

You can pull the recoil several times in a row to check compression, I usually pull it 5 times to check compression on each cylinder. You should use an air gap spark checker to test spark, it should jump a 7/16" air gap and be bright blue and and have a snapping sound.

If you get 10 on one pull something's wrong, there's your prorblem. A motor with good compression should give you 4 or 5 max. Measure it anyways and see what you get. Pull the chord 4 or 5 times, it takes time to build up pressure. To test spark a spark tester is best but you could pull the plugs and ground one at a time to the block and get someone to pull it over.

Compression-
I pulled the cord five times on each cylinder.
On the top (I assume cyl no.1) I got 110.
On the bottom I only got 93.

I know you are only supposed to off by 10%, how big of a deal is this?

Spark-
TBD
I am going to go buy a tester.

When I pulled the plugs and wires it looks like there was some white lithium applied to the plugs that has since got really gummy, almost hard. What can I use to clean out the boots?

The plugs were also gapped to .038 instead of .030.

Here is a pic of one of the plugs, they both look identical.

Compression numbers not perfect, but you were pulling it over by hand. I don't think there is a problem with the compression.

No one in town has an air gap spark checker.

Is there any other way to test spark strength?

Testing it by arcing to the block would only test that I have spark at all correct?

If I didn't have spark at all wouldn't one plug look different from the other?
They look as if pulled from the same cylinder.

I ended up spraying WD-40 in the boots and cleaned the grease out with Q-tips. I then squirted some Grote Ultra-seal into the boots and on the terminals of the coils and the plugs. It started right up and then it started raining.
I'll take it for a spin later today or in the morning to see if new plugs and proper gap helped.

I ordered in an air gap spark tester. I will report tomorrow.

Here are some better pics of the plug. Again I only took one pics of one plug because they are in identical condition.

I'm no expert, but that plug looks like it's firing to me. Be sure to ground the other lead when testing spark. You don't want to damage your ignition system.

I just took it out for a spin. It felt a little better. I guess it's down to the carb rebuild.
