Hello All,

I just bought a used deckboat with a 1993 88 SPL motor on it. After 2 hours on the water, the motor became gas starved. It would run if I used the electric choke to feed gas to it. The motor idles ok without the use of the choke but if I go over 1500-2000 rpm it wont rev up in rpm's. I figure its the diaphram in the fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. My brother, who does not live close, is a marine mechanic and made the diagnosis over the phone...
I do not have a manual for the motor so Im pretty much lost.
Am I heading in the right direction thinking its the fuel pump or clogged filter?
Does anyone have a diagram or link to a diagram of the upper portion of the motor I can reference. What should the compression be for this motor. What prop should be on this boat. It tops out at 4500 rpm and 30-31 mph. My brother said it should be at 5000-5500 rpm so I need to step down on the pitch but I dont know.
The guy I bought it from is coming over today with his mechanic to look at the motor. He said he will take care of it. The boat, a 1993 Lowe Suncruiser 220, is in great shape as the former owner had the carpet, upholstery, and all canvas replaced with new. It came with a 1998 tandem trailer.

Thanks for the help,

Mike Woods

tpd211@comcast.net

Re: 1993 Evinrude 88 SPL Motor

Changing out the filter and checking the fuel pump screen (sets right on front of the fuel pump) is a good place to start TPD. After this, run the engine on the water and if the condition arises again, have some one squeeze the primer bulb. If the engine picks up, problem could be the pump or you may have some leaky fuels lines sucking air. Look for hard fuel lines that have lost their flex.

If problem persists, carbs probably need over hauled. Jets are plugged.

Keep us posted....Thanks.

OBJ,

Thanks for the reply.

I'll check the items today and look for hard fuel lines.
The engine did not pick up speed squeezing the bulb yesterday. Cay ya spray carb cleaner on the fuel lines to see if they are sucking air. I have some knowledge of car engines but am very limited in boat motors.
My brother mentioned the fuel lines and possible jet pluggage also.

I'll keep the thread posted with updates.

Thanks

Yea...the carb cleaner is a good idea. I've used it in the past to find bad gaskets on the block so give it a try.

Since you have already tried squeezing the primer bulb and if cleaning the filters doesn't do the trick, I'd go for the carbs. They aren't as complicated as a carb on a car but be sure to spray out all passages with carb cleaner and follow up with compressed air. A service manual will help you with the tear down.

UPDATE:

Mechanic looked at the motor. Started it, gas was pouring out of the valve on the electric choke by the red knob. Inspection showed the red knob is cracked. Former owner/s probably screwed the cap or fitting on it to tight.
He took off the choke assembley and will gat a new one tomorrow.

TPD211

OBJ gave you the best possible advice:

"OBJ
*When all else fails...use the manual."

That is the primer, it's not a choke, but it sounds like you found your problem. Now I would get a lower pitch prop on there and bring those RPM's up. Good Luck.

UPDATE: 2

Mechanic dude put on the new part and it ran great. He said that Evinrude just sells the red part to the primer, (not choke as I thought) as they break often. He didnt need to buy the whole primer.
Wife and I went for a sunset run, I wound it up as fast as it would go, 4800 rpm and 31-32 mph.
That was with 3/4 to full tank of gas, 25 gallons.

Thanks for the help, this looks like a great board to exchange info :)

Mike Woods aka TPD211
Tavares, FL.

AS soon as I can get to the local Evinrude dealer I'm buying a manual, if he does not have them I'll order one on-line.

TPD211

If you want better longevity of your engine you're gonna need to drop 4" in pitch, or check the possibilities of lifting your engine on the transom, and dropping 2" in pitch....4800RPM will shorten the life of your engine and add other problems in the near future.

Re: 1993 Evinrude 88 SPL Motor

Well, I bought a Clymer manual for the 88 spl and it helps quite a bit in answering some of my questions.
The numbers off of my prop are 175013 and looking it up it is a OMC SST 13 pitch prop rated for pontoon boats up to 28 mph.
Since this is a decent prop, I'll take the suggestion and raise the motor to see if the rpm's come up a few hundred rpm's at wot.
Specs in the manual call for 4500-5500 rpm at full speed so I'm within specs at 4800 rpm at wot but I would lkike to be at 5000-5500 as suggested.

Thanks for the help, great forum

 TPD211

TPD,

Good idea. If that does not work out, I would be willing to bet that an 11" will get you right were you want to be.

Good luck! Let us know.

Re: 1993 Evinrude 88 SPL Motor

Just a quick question that I didin't really want to start a new post, as it has to to with this post a little. What does the "Special" mean in 88 SPL, I thought this was the same block as the 90 and 115 so was wondering what the "Special" is for. Thanks.

The "Special" used to mean, No VRO and No T&T, unless ordered separatly. Kind of a stripped down model, if you will. It is the same motor as it's "Even" counterpart, without the frills...

Re: 1993 Evinrude 88 SPL Motor

The 88 SPL is on a 1993 Lowe 220 Deckboat, it has T&T but no VRO, so I have to pre-mix which isnt to bad.

I'm thinking of using Amsoil as a pre-mix as I did with my jetskis and had real good results with it. It burns real clean and I like synthetic oil and the lubricating properties of it.

TPD211

Re: 1993 Evinrude 88 SPL Motor

So why would they make it without VRO, and why is it 88hp instead of just a 90hp "SPL" , no VRO, or tilt? Thanks.

Re: 1993 Evinrude 88 SPL Motor

Maybe at the time, 1993, the competition had 85 hp motors so Evinrude came out with 88 hp to compete in the market.
Just a guess.

Photo of Motor, I have Evinrude paint for the cover, winter project I think.
