If you jump the starter with a screw driver it turns over if you try the key you get nothing. Any ideas about what's wrong?

Checked it and was good. Its something to do with the key switch. The key switch has power on the s wire but when its turned the motor does nothing. I do have the throttle apart right now to take and old wood pannel off. Do the screws is at hold it together ground it or complete the circut as a safety precaution? Its the standard omc the ignition is separate from the throttle.

Click the thumbnail for the circuit diagram. You could have a bad connection in the Red harness plug or a broken wire in the harness.

Check the circuit from the small post on the starter solenoid to the ignition switch "S" post with your ohmmeter (battery disconnected).

Also, make sure that the ground wire to the small starter solenoid post is good.

BTW, don't use a 30 amp fuse; spec is 20 AGA. 30 is too much load for the wiring.

Took a look today and found that the purple wire coming off the key going to the small box, not sure what it is, then going back to the key was loose.

No.

The problem is caused by power not traveling through the ignition switch to the small post on the starter solenoid.

Power travels to the ignition switch on the Red/purple wire connected to the "B" post on the ignition, and back to the solenoid on the red/yellow wire connected to the "S" post on the ignition.

If the ground wire from the other small post on the starter solenoid is good, and if the circuit through the ignition switch is good, turning the key to start will activate the solenoid and run the starter motor, provided the control arm is in neutral and the neutral safety switch is good.

A possibility is also the safety switch as shown by Ezek in his previous post check the connections yellow/red for continuity through the switch in some ignition it will be the opposite open ..

Do you hear a click coming from the solenoid when you turn the key to the start position? If you do not hear the click then the solenoid itself may be the problem.

After doing some poking around got the engine to start. I don't know if its correct but it required me to put a wire to my fuse block and a wire to the ground.

Replaced the key switch and motor started right up.
