I got a great deal on a Evinrude 40 commerical motor. I have realized it has no tilt tube but he has a Teleflex adapter plate for my teleflex steering, This is just a idea that i wanted to get some opinions on but could someone not just get a piece of pipe that is completley threaded instead of paying 70 dollars for a new tilt tube, the reason i ask is i am not so sure on this adapter plate that mounts under the c clamps on the inside of the boat i have never seen this adapter maybe someone on here has more experience than me and can help me out. Thanks for all the POSITIVE input.

I have seen them used a few times. I have seen another type used that uses the transom clamps to hold it in place instead of bolting it on, usually on small hp engines, they both seemed to work well.

Do you think if i had a piece of aluminum or pipe that was threaded i could make my own tilt tube instead of paying 60-80 dollars for one. The motor does not have t and t it would just support the steering cable.

If you have the tools, material and knowledge you should have no problem makeing one.

I was thinking of getting a galvanized nipple 12" long from Lowes for 5.00 dollars would do the same thing and better than spending 75 bucks on one. I think a 1/2" nipple would work just fine for my Teleflex steering cable.

Galvanized around water doesn't seem to last very long. Try it and see if you can make it work, at least it will tell you if you can build it.

The steering cable people had to do something to try and keep people from using their design and build there own parts. Try calling a couple of salvage yards and see if they can help you out.

Check your dealer. I had the exact same problem but he sold me a used tube for $15 or $20, I forget which, but it was pretty cheap. I also wondered about building my own but then got this one.
