Nice boat and....nice Atlantic. Very tasty for sure. Good luck with your Islander, they make great fishing boats. Not sure of the problem you had with the trolling plate, I have ran the happy troller for well over 3o years on different boats and think it is a pretty good unit to get your speed down to where you want it. I troll salmon on the Great Lakes anywhere from 2.5-3.4 sog. The plate in the full down position does not allow those speeds so I notched the plate half way between full open and full closed. (Left circle in pic) This allows me to troll faster plus keep the rpm up around 800 - 1000 for trolling which also keeps the oil pressure up. Also on the outdrive I run the cord up through the hole in the cap on the outdrive so it isn't flailing all over the place. (Right circle in pic.)

Another benefit of the half way notch is that it allows way better steering control as you probably found out they don't steer all that well with the plate in full down position. You can also adjust the speed a bit with your trim, by trimming all the way down it will slow it down more and trimming up will speed it up some.

I do not like the happy troller so I took it back and did upgrade To an easytroller with fins (I have to have them or its a pain go plane out/) any one ever used the trolling plates with a big hole in them? I hate how I loose so much ability to "drive" the boat and almost hopeless in the wind due to the size and weight of the boat so I will try and cut a "half way" notch in the new plate.

800 sounds about right....that's about as low as I can get on my 3.0....gives you that satisfying clunk when you put it in gear!!!

I think I can get it lower when it warms up....anybody get their 3.0 to idle lower?

Great Looking Islander, looks like a perfect boat for the climate and location. Splash ready is sooooooo cool.:D
