I am trying to take apart my control box for a repaint job, and everything is out except for the main forward/back speed control handle. How does one separate the inside from the outside? I have taken the allen head screw out of the center of the inside, but do I need to use a drift to separate, or am I missing something.

thanks

Re: 1993 Johnson 65 HP Control Box

Welcome to iboats Mike!

Here's what to do. Put the allen head screw back in and run it back out about two turns. Now take a flat punch that fits the center of the screw and give it a pop with a hammer. This should pop the control handle splines apart. Remove the allen head screw and remove the handle. Should be three phillips head screw holding the halves together. Remove them and the halves will come apart.

If yer goin' to get into this thing, get yourself an OEM manual for it. It'll show you step by step how it comes apart and how to put it back together.

Thanks OBJ, much appreciated.

I have the other half all painted and put back together, and as I disassembled this side I took a series of digital pictures, so shouldn't have too much problem with re-assembly.

I wonder how much a new box would be as this one is fairly corroded. Going into a brand new Double Eagle 16 ft, so I am trying to make it pretty..LOL

Mike

Usually a good selection of reasonably priced ones on E-bay....

Mike, Just thought I'd let you know.

I'm not sure if this unit will work on your motor, but I just checked the pricing and the cost for a new control for my 1989 J 50 was around $180.
