Hi I have a little trolling motor that is doing something strange. The motor will not shift into neutral. I took the lower apart and observed who it works. It is not you normal arrangement(clutch dog, spring and button) it is a coil spring that is on the shaft between the drive gear and pinion get the shift shaft protrudes in neutral and catches the end of the spring and does something to cause the gears to come apart into neutral. not sure what to do. Should I replace the spring or shift rod or both? Any advice will be appreciated. Any one else have this problem? Thanks....Robert

Thats the model number for 1996 ed=96, ( 93 = et)
Not that it makes any difference.

Bit of a mystery to me too but:

I think you will find that the spring is a form of clutch. I don't think the gears themselves come apart they remain in mesh.

Make sure the shift rod does engage with the end of the spring and that gear will revolve on the shaft. Guessing but I imagine that the spring should not rotate freely on the shoulder on the shaft

A good photo of the spring in case it helps below.

Thanks for the post. The picture is it. I will take it apart again and will check to make sure the gear does rotate on the shaft. The first time I disassembled it. I had it work for about four shifts in and out of gear and then nothing but forwad gear. I'm still confused as to how it does what it's supposed to do. Thanks....Robert

OK another disassemble. and I found two things the spring is square on the tang . yours is tapered. It look like it is joggled towards the prop end my shift shaft comes down missing the tang, like the shaft protrudes too deep into the case. anyway the two are not contacting and that's why it won't go into neutral. it is very doubtfull that I

I want to thanks to Vic S. for his picture and advice. I took a large screw driver and separated the last coil and heated up the very end of the spring and jog it in to look just like the picture. The shift rod now make good positive contact with end and I now have neutral back....Robert
