1993 Merc. 5HP kicker help

[FLATHEAD]

1993 5 horse merc kicker. I have spark I have fuel but wont start. It has its own tank and the vent is cracked. Tried unhooking the kill switch still no start. I know its getting fuel because by the time I was done foolin with it it was dripping out the exhaust. Last year it was running fine and just quit last time out. It will start for about two seconds about every 20 pulls. I am sure this is not due to flooding. What could it be. Thanks<br /> -----------<br />Flathead

Check your plugs and see if they are wet with fuel. Check for spark at the same time. Finally put your thumb over the plug hole and pull,should have enough compression to blow it off. If all those are present,your timing is probably off. Reset to specs.

dmessy, Yes plug is wet (getting fuel) plenty of comperssion and spark is present. I was thinking timing too but it baffles me why it would just go out of time all of the sudden, one minute running like a top dead the next. I thought I may be missing something as I have not worked on many 2 stroke marine motors. Thanks<br />Flathead

Sheared flywheel key? Pull the flywheel and check components

Another thought b4 pulling wheel...put in new plugs and spray premix directly into throat of carb. Pull rope with throttle at least 1/2 open and no choke. Should fire up briefly. Let us know, OK.

Hi Flahthead<br /> This sounds like it might be a crankshaft seal. You not only need compression in the cylender,but also in the crankcase.

Thanks dmessy, Alcan, I found the problem. While looking at the carb I noticed a nice big nick in plug wire. I must not have been getting a strong enough spark. Put on a new wire and bang first pull she lit. Wish all fix's were this cheap.<br /><br />---------------<br />Flathead

They usually are..look for simple things like you found. Glad you got it going, hope you "git bit"
