As an aside...nice looking boat you've got there. As long as you're taking things apart she would be much more fun with a 4.3L V6. Not sure but I don't think there would be a whole lot of changes to make to do that swap.

I just tried to pressure test the block, and i used about 15 psi, built pressure quick then....
I heard a "Pop! " then gurgling,
Sounds like i broke something

I did remove the t-stat, and drained the block.I thought I would have to remove the t-stat, so the air will flow to the pressure gauge I had rigged up, at the t- stat hose. I did follow the sound, and it appears to sound like it was coming from the Power Steering Cooler? not sure it there are seals inside that cooler, control valve maybe?
maybe there was still water in that cooler, couldn't find anything on draining water from that PSC, remember I'm new to these marine engines
here is a pic of the way I hook up to do my pressure test. I removed the fresh/salt water inlet tube hose. I used that hose for the air pressure supply. I then rigged up a pressure gauge line coming from the hoes from the t- stat that would go over to the intake manifold

Ayuh,..... P/Steerin' Coolers are just a heat exchanger, 'n I'm guessin' yer's is frozen/ split,...

They're drained by pullin' either of the Big hoses off,...

I'da hooked right to the t-stat housin' for a Block test, but ya wouldn't have found the blown P/S cooler that way I guess,...

That still don't explain water in the base,....

Move that test point to the t-stat housin' end of that hose, 'n try again,...

I did a water test, and have water pouring out below the bell housing, and below the starter
But not in the engine oil pan, it is dry, no water coming out there

So did i blow out a hose, or is it a busted block at the rear

Ayuh,.... There's a core plug or 2, Behind the flywheel, in the block,....

When it froze, atleast 1 of 'em was pushed out,...

I removed the power steering cooler from the engine. I had a look inside, nothing blown, so I Guess the big " POP" heard was the freeze plug blowing out...

so, I guess, now I have no choice but to pull that engine, and see what is going on, but I do this still not knowing if the block has an internal crack

just thinking out loud

I will do a compression test on the cylinders tomorrow, if they check out witin specs, I will do a compression leak down test.
not sure if all this is going to work out the way I think t will, but I don't give up easily.

Assuming the water's not running down the outside from around the power steering cooler. Your going to have to pull the engine to see what's going on.
It's not like pulling a car engine. You need to remove the out-drive and then pull the bell housing out with the engine. the wiring, starter, alternator, etc come with it.

If it has been frozen that bad, I'd be seriously thinking about another block.

Yup, you'll need to pull the engine at this point, to replace the core plug. Once the plug is replaced and sealant cured you can proceed with the block pressure testing.

Though, it's not sounding too good, JBwelded (cracked?) block, pushed core plug, water in oil (internal crack?)

Might as well pull it and do some testing...

thanks for all the great advice!

I have no choice but to pull that block. I have pulled many auto engine, and transmissions for replacement, but this will be different.

I am starting my search on what the steps are to do this.

thanks!

update
I pulled the Alhpa One this morning, there water in the bellows?" Gimbal bearing is going to have to be replaced, haven't checked for a crack in the bellows, but water was in it, not sure how it got there?
on a positive note, if I can call it that...I check the compression on each cyl today
#1- 180 #2-178 #3- 175 #4-178
i will do a cyl leak test today time permitting

update

I decided to pull the engine, everything is unhooked, and unplugged

I am not sure if I will do this next weekend, or not, but it is ready to be lifted :)

The compression numbers may be good, but compression check and cylinder leakdown checks will not show internal water jacket cracks. Only pressuring the block water jacket cooling passages system will reveal those. And even then sometimes the cracks are very fine and may hold while the block is cold and static. So the real test is running the engine under load conditions for 30 minutes, not recommended, but that is the "acid test".

The water in the bellows brings up the same question as the trim pump reservoir. Did it come from inside or outside the boat? But take a REAL good look at the drive shaft bellows and the shift cable bellows.

thanks for the great advice, and continuing willingness to help with you knowledge towards this project. I am not sure if this engine is worth saving? but if not, maybe I can sell parts off of it, and put the money towards another used engine...

Now I have another question

What about the u-joints, they look to me like I may need to replace them? at some point

We'll do, thanks! I will remember that

Thanks again!

This engine may not work out, but I need to pull it, and figure out what to do
If I were wealthy, I would just buy a brand new boat:)

Yes, good advice with both forums
I have belonged to both forums for a while now
So many knowledgeable folks on each.

I also have a free Glastron Carlson cv16
Project boat that i had to throw up the white flag on, if somone wants it, no trailer
