Just picked up a trim unit from a 1993 Mercury. Motor runs and reverses, but the ram does not move. Have changed out the fluid, but still no success..

I am not the first person to open this unit, tool marking on internals and the drain was turned 90 degrees from factory position. Does anyone have detailed pictures or parts diagrams of the internals of the manifold. I put it all back the way I found it, but something is missing.

Thanks for any help you can offer. Feels I am so close, but when dealing with hydraulics close isn't enough.

When you change out the ATF your supposed to leave the fill cap off run the ram up and down 10 times to bleed out the air.
You can go to sea-way marine dot com enter your motors serial # and try to find the T&T unit.diagram.
Is oil leaking out of the ram seals? If not they should be good.
What was wrong with the old T&T unit?

Tommarvin, Thanks for the response and suggestion on bleeding the system (different than what I read as it was supposed to be self bleeding). I will give that a shot.

I am replacing the manual tilt assist with a factory Tilt and Trim unit, after some searching I was able to locate the parts diagram, but it is does not show inside the manifold and I know that someone before me opened it (tool marks on the aluminum cap). The unit does not leak and it seems to build some pressure (fluid Pours out when you open the fill plug). But when you apply power, the motor spins but the ram does not move.

I have manually pulled the ram out to full extension and you can feel the vacuum it is creating and there is no oil around the ram so the seals feel good.

The unit was absolutely clean (no corrosion) - But when I opened the manifold to check the rocker arm assembly and the valves. I noticed one spring in a hole, but no ball, gasket, or anything else that correlates. I can follow the rest of the fluid paths and see nothing to cause concern. Rocker arms pivot smoothly, the corresponding plungers move up and down as you rotate the drive shaft, there were two springs and balls in place. But the one mystery spring and no other ball or gasket. I really feel I am one ball or o-ring from a functioning unit.

I know this is not normally something you tear down this far, but with a replacement unit at the $1,000 mark I am going to give this $100 a few attempts before I give up.

thank you,

Maybe go to seawaymarine.com and try to find your T&T unit exploded view.
I agree, your good and very close, to fixing T&T,
We did this on a force 125hp, We searched the net over alot of effort, finally found the answer tore it apart and fixed it with one o-ring, keep up the good effort, tear it apart now and find the problem now before next season.
