Hello
Im new to this site. I have a 1993 40hp Nissan outboard. I have fresh gas. the engine starts but will not stay running. it will only run if i prime it/ choke it by pressing the key in.

I removed the carb and cleaned out the high and low speed jets and also the bowl which had gas in it. I did not take apart the float/ needle/ seat?

The external fuel pump looked clean....why would it not get gas?

You need to completely disassemble the carb and submerge in real carb dip for at least 3 hours, then reassemble, adjust float, set link and sync.

I remember a few years ago the float was getting stuck or something along those lines. do you know who would sell carb rebuild kits for a 1993 40 nissan with the keihin carb....maybe a new needle/ seat?

Just called the dealer and they said the carb was in bad shape and they ordered a new one bc it is cheaper than rebuilding it new($184) plus labor to install it. Are there diaphrams inside these carbs? i took it all apert before i brought it over except for the float assembly/ needle/seat.

No diaphragms in the carb. They are in the fuel pump on that model.

hmmm....so how would a carb from this model get "beat up" and need to be replaced. do you think that it is more cost effective to have it replaced than to have the service dept rebuild the carb? i dont get their reasoning? I hate dealers and am worried about getting taken advantage of especially when i could prob do the work myself

Normally it wouldn't, but any long term water damage could kill it or a passage that they can't clear. Unfortunately many dealers do not clean carbs correctly and give up on them.

Water contamination can/will cause corrosion that cannot be removed from the small passages by ordinary carb cleaners, as they are designed to dissolve organic varnishes. If there's only varnishing, a 4-hour soak in carb dip should clean it out for you. If the carb is beyond repair, and you are unsure of the shop, order a new one and install it yourself...
