Haven't had my boat in the water for about a year. Trying to get it back in shape. Just change the steering cable and the shift and throttle cables. I went to hook up a fresh battery and hooked up the positive. When I went to hook up the negative a had some sparks. I have a Perko switch for two batteries. I was only was installing one battery and made sure the other battery leads were not touching anything. If the switch is in the off position, no sparks. I disconnected a line that feeds the dash and accessories and still have a spark when connecting the negative if the perko switch is on. ( I know it should be off but I am trying to see if I have something that is putting a drain on my batteries. I measured the current draw and it was only 6milliamps. Do I have a problem? What path on the engine would be drawing current ? Thanks.

Try disconnecting the red wire to the rectifier/regulator then reconnect the battery cable, if no spark now, remove the rec/reg and test as spelled out in the service manual.

Re: 1994 200hp Mariner electrical question

Charlie,

I made a mistake in my earlier post. I have 6ma current draw. My engine has 2 regulators with two red wires each. I disconnected one set and lost about 3ma, disconnected the other two and lost the other 3ma. I am starting to think its normal, just that I never noticed. I think I will get it up and running and see if it charges properly. Let me know if there is something else to check. Thanks.
