1994 50hp Johnson carb question?

Would it hurt anything to put a 40hp dual carb setup on my 50hp Johnson. Everything looks the same except the 40's carbs have a smaller throat. I'm not really concerned about hi-speed running, but more on trolling/fishing applications. I have the engine completely tore down and it's being board out to .030 over. I think I should get slightly better fuel economy with this setup also. Anybody have any input?

i think if you open your plug gap .005 over recommended you will find trolling better, than messing with the design. could cut down on lubrication. they recommended the .005 to .010 over for the older motors to cut down on fouling.

Re: 1994 50hp Johnson carb question?

Thanks for the reply. As for lubrication I'm disconnecting the VRO unit and going to premix. The VRO unit is why it's being rebuilt in the first place. As for the carbs that are on it I have always had a problem mantaining proper idle on the top carb and could never figure out why. The two 40hp Carbs are like new and it's an easy bolt on, plus I thought since I'm not that interested in top end, but more on trolling and gas consumption, that maybe the two 40hp carbs might just be the ticket. My own thought is that it wouldn't hurt anything, but just thought I'd ask to make sure. Thanks, John
