Hi,
I'm looking for some help on setting up this motor for a tiller. I have never done this before, and I'd hoped it would be an easy bolt-on job, but not so far! The pics attached show the front of the motor I'm trying to attach a tiller to. I understand (I think) how the shifter, throttle, wiring etc. all connect, but I'm not sure how the tiller mechanically connects to the motor. Here's a link to the tiller I bought: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0519421153&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Obviously it doesn't fit, but is that because it's the wrong tiller, or because there's another piece (that I'm missing) that goes between the motor and the tiller? The motor serial number is 0G024262 if that helps.
I'm also posting on the thread about the boat I'm planning to use this motor on: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=472568
Thanks,
Lewis

most engine casts are done to conform to both tiller and remote minus and brackets cable holders throttle linkage etc. Basicly the block can be converted with the right items, it may get expensive see what you need find parts as low as possible and good luck they wouldn,t make a seperate block to just compesate for a tiller under a certain HP. 60 seems to be one of the ones i doubt thet would take acception to conversion. thats pretty big. look for holes for screws in the side of the block that are not used that shows you can convert it

Thanks, Max. I'm not really questioning whether I can use a tiller on this motor, but more specifically what parts are needed.

There should have been 2 studs with kit, these screw into swivel arm (pic's you posted) and the tiller bracket slides over the studs and held in place with tab washers and nuts....

Thanks, Faz. I didn't actually get a kit.; just the tiller. So maybe the first question is: what pieces other than the tiller itself would be included in a kit? Is there something that fits between the lower shroud on the motor and the tiller? Or does the tiller- if you have the right one- just mount directly to the motor?

Re: 1994 60HP tiller conversion

Can anyone provide general information on converting a Mercury to a tiller? Doesn't have to be this specific year or HP; anything close in age or power would help me out. I have a manual, and it shows both remote control and tiller, but nothing on the actual conversion. From what I can tell, if I get the right tiller, it should bolt on with just two bolts. But I could be wrong!

Lewis;

For information, that s/n comes up as a model:

1060412PD MERCURY 1994 60

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/571.cfm

Service Manual: P/N 90-817643R1

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/817643r1/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat Raeder to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

Check section 7 and the corresponding one in the parts listing to see if you can see what you are looking for.

Re: 1994 60HP tiller conversion

Thanks Gerry! This information seems to indicate that I do have the right tiller. It will certainly bolt on, but it just doesn't look right to me. Is there supposed to be a space between the back of the tiller bracket and the front of the motor? I had assumed it would match up flush, but maybe that's not the case? If you and any other folks with more experience than me could check out the attached pics and let me know if this is how it should fit, I would certainly appreciate it. I tried to prop it in place where it would fit when bolted on. It's tilting down just a bit, but its pretty close.

OK, so maybe I've been unnecessarily worried -- and taking up unnecessary bandwidth here. Attached are a couple of pics of the tiller bolted on and the engine cowl on. Looks fine to me!

Lewis;

Didn't realize you were having a problem but looks as though you have it right anyway. Good on you and hope everything else works OK.
