BTW RW. Just looked up the price of a new 18 foot bowrider from bayliner. over $17000. So, I might be a madman but when finished I will have practically a new boat for a total purcase and restoration cost of just under $6000 saving me 11,000. sounds like a good deal to me.

yeppers for sure wildvortex I look at it the same way bud..boats up here in the 94 range sell for 7-9 grand for an 18 ft bowrider ...they get good prices for boats up here. if you don't want anything with good running gear you can get a hull for 2 grand...it is hard to find a boat for 5 hundred. That being said a used sterdrive goes from 1500 to 2 grand and a motor LOL used could be 1500 for a 3.0....For instance I had a motor built down in pennsylvania for my car a 383 stoker..it cost me 4500 for the beast...I had the same motor priced up here from a very reputable machine shop and he wanted 11500....I guess what I am trying to say is it all depends on where you live on what the value of your boat will be in the end. The boats I was talking about that go for 7-9 grand have been sitting in the weather too. I have looked at a few and have told the owners what I am doing and you could expect the same out of yours. Anyhow you will enjoy and know what you have in the end. I actually had to have my boat appraised when i got it insured and the appraiser the insurance sent out to do it appraised mine at 8500....only if he knew the problems hidden under the floor and what I actually paid ...oh ya I have been offered a grand just for my old boat trailer too :) An 18ft on fall sale up here is going for 23500 before taxes and delivery charges and what ever else they will sneek in , we pay to much for stuff out here .. Keep up the fine job

Lowered the top back on her and did the intial rivets. Had some problems where the top part of the hull had extended out just a bit and I could not get the top to go all the way down. PMed another member and he recommened using straps to pull it in and down. this was not enough so unfortunatly I had to cut out some of my tabbing and a bit of ply to give it a little more room. looks like glassing is not done as I had thought.

:p I am working on the rub rail right now doing a bit of touch up to give it some bling. Need to get a couple more pictures to show you what and how I did it.:p

Right on looks real good . That was a decision I had to make when I started ,either to take the cap off or not. I decided to go the root with the cap on and do my fiberglassing. Then I took it off after . It was alot more work working around the cap then it would have been just to cut and fix a little fiberglass if it was tight. I will most likely go with the cap off if I ever do one again and hope it works out. Good to see the cap back on. I am going to do a little more work to mine soon then take a bit off to do some whitetail hunting. I have been playing a bit with the upholstery too.

So now have the majority of the rub strip done and on the boat. just the front section left. I do not have the insert yet and may wait til spring to get it. so this is what I have been doing to the strip. The origional strip had a coat of what appeared to be a clear/grey paint. there was little to no shine to is as well as 17 years of scuffs.
IMG_4279.jpg

I first took a brass wire brush on my drill press to it to remove the paint. later found it was just as fast to use 120 grit sandpaper.
IMG_4269.jpg

Then I sanded with 180 grit.
IMG_4272.jpg

lastly I sanded with 400 wet, 600 wet, 800wet, and 1000 wet. Then I just lightly hit it with rubbing compound with this being the end result. if you notice the channel for the insert that is the origional color.

I tried using jewlers rough on it with a buff pad on my bench grinder but rubbing compound does just as well and is easier. I have not rubbed it all out yet as I will wait til the project is done. Some of you might be wondering about oxidation but I believe that keeping a good coat of wax on it will prevent this. If not then it is not much work to tape it off and spray clear on it. I will do the same with the suround around the glass when I get to that wich will be much later in the winter.

Did you do the normal procedure of coating the plywood both sides with resin then 1 coat of csm on everything before you started? Then proceed with 2 coats of 1708 for stringers, 2 coats of 1708 on the transom then 1708 for tabbing on the transom and on the hull and then 2 coats of csm on the top of the deck. Did you use polyester resin and how much? Just trying to give people an idea of what material was used and the procedure you used.

Sorry to hear about your cap fitment troubles. That's at least the second time I've seen that situation occur here on the forums. So what do we think would be the advice to prevent that from happening? Decap, do the transom, then recap to do the deck?

I did the whole thing in 1.5 oz chopped strand. everything got one layer except transom which got 2 on one side and 3 on the other. The deck got 3 layers and 6 in tabbing to the hull. all stringers were done first with a 6 in tab then a 10 inch tab. I used about 22 gallons of poly resin.
