I have a 1994 Bayliner Capri with a 3.0 litre mercruiser in it. Its blown up.I know a guy that has a 1989 Calcutta ski boat with a OMC 5.0 cobra. I was wondering if i could replace the 3.0 with the 5.0 and everything bolt up and function properly. Any help or knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated.

The hole in the transom is the same for the Cobra and the Mercruiser.
After that, all bets are off. Putting a big engine in a small area with completely differnt mounting system is never a "Bolt Up" installlation.

could it be done with minor or major mods? i can buy the 5.0 off a guy for 900bucks, and get the boat and trailer, the boat itself is junk tho but the motor is great.

I'm not 100% on this, but it appears many of the Bayliner hulls are the same for 4-8 cylinder boats. On my 1950, the engine bay also has the rails V6 and V8 mounting. The forward stringer in the engine bay is reinforced for 3.0 front style mount. May not be plug and play. And if the engine physically fits in the bay, I wouldn't think it's a complete nightmare... You may be better off finding a Mercruiser 4.3 or 5.0 as they would bolt up to your out-drive, and you would only need a re-gear. ( And maybe a new prop ) ? At some point I'm planning to put a 4.3 in my Bayliner.

Changing from an in-line to a V engine is almost always going to be a challenge.

Good luck....

My friend has a 19' Bayliner that has stamped on the transom 135 hp max, what size is this boat?

You easiest out is a another 3.0, cheap on gas, don't have to change out the gears, at least 350 for a gear change after market.

This doesn't answer your question, but I'm sure you can fine a 3.0 with good compression for less than you'll pay for that V8 engine.

And, if the replacement 3.0 is complete, then you'd have a tone of spare parts.

As noted above,..
Even swapping in a 5.0l Mercruiser is quite a Chore....
