Re: 1994 Evinrude 112 SPL Cracked Float Chambers

I started the motor tonight and so far so good I guess. It seems to run good and idles good. The only thing I noticed was when I went to first start it it had a spot where it seemed to "catch". Starting it warm it popped right over. After that I let it cool and changed the lower unit fluid. I waited another half hour or so and then I started it again. I did not pull up the high idle lever at first and it seemed to have the "catch" again when starting it. I know on four stroke motors that this can be because of timing advanced too far. I did advance the timing 4 more degrees than where it was before and it should be right at spec if the reeves method actually works. Anyway, when it catched it popped over once and snorted out the exhaust. I lifted the high idle lever a little and it started right up the next turn of the key. I idled it down right away and it idled real nice. Any thoughts on why it "catches"? Could my timing be too high for some reason?

The other thing I did not do was check the battery. It has been sitting all summer disconnected so maybe its low on charge. It did seem to turn over fine, but maybe not fine enough when under compression with a charge of air/fuel. I will put it on the charger tonight.

Could be a number of things on the starter catch. Typcically, too much timing can make it seem like the engine is laboring when cranking. Yes, idle timing is different than WOT timing. Usually it takes more than just a few degrees too much to affect starting. It is possible to have a few degrees too much timing at idle. A factory procedure called Sync and Link will insure you get the initial timing correctly set (sync'd) with the carb butterfly opening. There is a general spec for setting the "final" idle timing-but it will vary, based on the time when you finally set the idle when the boat is floating in the water and it is in forward gear.

OK, thanks. I did start it again yesterday and it seemed to start fine. In fact, when I would shut it off and start it again it would pop right over with the touch of the key. I don't think it has ever done that. I hope it stays that way and starts like that in the water. I did do the link and sync and I am comfident I have always been doing it right. I followed the steps right out of the service manual. The final idle adjustent is just an idle screw that advances the timing. Right now I have it backed off as it idles on the muffs at about 1100. Spec is 600/650 in the water in forward gear. I might actually get a chance to get out on the water with the boat today and try it out. Thanks for everyones help so far. I hope my first trip goes well. The motor seems a little rich to me, but it could be the seafoam burning out I fogged it with at the end of last year as well.

If you are starting out at 1100 while still on the trailer, you will be close when you actually get it floating in the water in gear.

Well I took the boat out today and.............wow. It ran better than it has ever run for me. It started right up and kept running without dying. It would always snub out a few times before staying running before. I only had to high idle it for a little bit and it would sit and idle perfect. I thought it would be a little loaded up, but it never gave as much as a sneeze when giving it throttle. Even after fishing for a while it would start right up no problem. I would say its as close to turn key as a carb motor gets. I am super happy with it. The last time starting it tonight it did have that "catch" in it right when I hit the key and then it popped right over and idled. I don't know what is up with that, but as long as it doesn't pose a problem I guess I won't be worried. Thanks to all that helped me get this thing running perfect!!
