1994 Evinrude 140 water pump question

Im going to replace the water pump in my motor this Saturday and need some clarification before I get started.
1994 Evinrude 140
How do I disconnect the shift linkage?
The only water pump I've ever done was a 1980 OMC 35hp

just disconnect the cross pin holding the shift rod near the PH (on the side)

models vary .. do not turn (unscrew or screw the shift rod.. keep it aligned when replacing

A service manual is in order. It will explain exactly how to do it, what adhesives, greases and permatex products will substitute for the OMC products cited.

Also, you may need to do other repairs, and most shops will not want to work on that old an engine.
