Hi, I know this subject has been discussed endlessly, but I cannot find the answers I'm looking for.

I have a 94 Force 70 Motor and the Tilt is not functioning. Motor Serial# OE032757. This is the external 2 wire Pump.

Problem, basically the Tilt motor is working correctly, it spins freely in forward and reverse. I have done the bypass of the solenoids and it works the same. I have taken the Tilt pump apart and everything looks good, but when I bench tested it, the pump just spins and doesn't push out the fluid. I've tried multiple things and have drained and filled several times. So if everything is spinning and working why doesn't it now push out the hydraulic fluid. I've even tried different oils, Tilt trim fluid, Trans fluid, and 30 weight oil, all work the same. Anybody have any ideas how I can bench test this unit. Mercury doesn't just sell the Hydraulic pump any more and they want to sell me the Part#832021A7 which is $600 bucks, I would like not to do this....

Thanks,

Re: 1994 Force 70 Tilt Pump problem

Does anybody have a proceedure to check and rebuild the Hydraulic Pump on this Unit? Like I said everything looked great inside the pump, the gears looked good, spring and bb's where in place, maybe there is some blockage that I can't see. Can I clean with something like carb cleaner and then reassemble? When I'm bench testing and have the unit in my hand and fire up the motor, should the fluid flow out the bottom hole, based on which way I'm spinning the motor?

Has it ever worked since you have had it?

Or could there be parts missing?

Does the drive shaft turn ( not the armature ) ?
Does the driveshaft mesh in the pump assembly?

Re: 1994 Force 70 Tilt Pump problem

Yes, it was working previous season, my brother was storing the boat over the winter, I went to pick it up and it didn't want to work. Basically did this before, but at that time we took it in and they said it was just low on oil. The drive shaft does turn and it's hex on both ends is in very good shape. When I'm bench testing I can take the fill plug out and watch the drive shaft spinning, but the oil doesn't seem to be getting into the pump. I did take the pump apart and checked the for obstructures, but didn't see any. Gears look great. Maybe check Valves aren't working, but I don't know how to test... Any suggestions. I have order the manual, but still waiting...

Sorry, haven't got any tips for you.
I would start watching ebay for one, sometimes they are a bargain, but don't count on it.

Re: 1994 Force 70 Tilt Pump problem

Well I found the problem. I got the Force manual, it wasn't that helpful, since the tilt assembly was not the same as mine, it seems like the Force engine "by Mercury" (91-95) they didn't cover as good in the manual. But the one thing that I saw was that the spring assembly was on the gear side and the check balls was on the bottom. When I took my pump apart my springs were on the bottom and the balls were by the pump gear. I turned them around and it works great. So basically when the pump spinned it was just free flowing thru the system since it was open on the suction side and pressure side. Anyway, I hope this might help somebody else.
