Put your "heavy" buds at the rear and check to see if the ball check valves are working in the scuppers. When the dirt and grime get washed on the deck, it tends to collect in the scuppers and not allow the ball to seat correctly. Many have the screw on tops that allow easy access to them. Open all access ports to hear the bilge pumps (forward and aft) and all other devices operate when checking the switchplate. Grab and shake the bowrail in several areas to check for loose connections. Carefully check the allen head screws that secure these fittings for being stripped out. Also, do a radio check offshore to check for transmitting/receiving strength. Check the safety bag. i.e. current flares, pfd's, etc..If it has an EPIRB, check that too. Again, this isn't intended to scare you. It's just a reminder to be thorough. It's easy to get wrapped up in the excitement and forget to check certain things. Hope this helps.

it does. thank you. went once again tonight to look at it. brought my uncle, who knows a thing or two about boats. brought a flashlight this time. we opened every hatch and access panel we could find. man those things are built. hand laid glass everywhere. not an ounce of wood in sight (i know it's there, just well covered). not a sign of any leaks or any water getting anywhere.

i think i'm making an offer tomorrow...

"Superb Engineering"...... "Grady-Built" ;)

Probably make the offer, contingent upon sea trial AND survey. Just to be safe and have an option out.

Good luck matt!

Re: 1994 Grady White 246G w/ Yamy repower

got a call last night from a fellow member of our power boat association. he worked for a grady dealer for 12 years in new york before moving down here this past fall.

we spoke for a good hour- gave me all kinds of info on the boats and the little quirks they have. the good news, in his experience, you have to look real hard to find problems with any grady. told me how they actually dropped boats at the dealership (great, huh?) and would pick them up without an ounce of damage. he had lots of good to say about the particular model i'm looking at. even told me about his two trips to their plant in north carolina. i got a lesson in the differences between hand laid glass and chop sprayed glass.

i made the offer this morning (contigent on water test and review of engine history/service records). rep is out until tomorrow. i got some inside info (2 people i work with actually know people that work at the dealership) that says the seller probably can't come down much since he still owes a good bit on the boat. i may have to go a little higher than my original plan, but i think this is one of those times you do chase it a bit.

Back to one of your original questions, I was looking at an Offshore Magazine last night, and of course it opened right up to the page with the used Gradys, I saw 3 24 footers, and the motors were 220, 225, and 250 hp. And they were all priced higher than the one you're looking at. If it's a good boat, what's another thousand or two. Hopefully it won't be a big depreciator, good boats don't go to low bidders I guess. Maybe it's worth all of what he's asking.......

For what it's worth, when I bought my Grady, the guy wouldn't budge. I paid what he was asking (which was reasonable based on NADA and ABOS) but got him to pay the spring commissioning. There aren't a lot of Grady's on the market at one time. If it's a Grady your looking for, you've got to bite the bullet. I low bid on another one before I bought this one. The dealer said, "we generally price them fairly and he'll get what he's asking but I'll submit your bid anyway". It was declined. I left the offer on the table but the boat must have sold for more because upon following up, it was gone. I learned my lesson. I wished I had gone up and was kicking myself for it.

i agree with you guys. part of my profession is negotiating construction contracts for the navy. unlike most, i know it's not always bid high, propose low, and split the difference. it's all about a fair and reasonable agreement between both parties. i was hoping he would come down a bit, simply because it fit better in my budget. but it's a selfish thing, because i think the boat is priced right. i found two other comps, not the exact boat, but both packages less than this one. they were both priced higher. this is probably a great deal, as long as the motor doesn't blow up on me (god forbid).

well, the dealer will be back tomorrow and i'll see where he goes. i'll be willing to give a bit as long as i see him wanting to complete the sale.

thanks again for all the advice and support.

Re: 1994 Grady White 246G w/ Yamy repower

I owned the exact same model, with the same options, except I believe it was a 1993. It had a Yamaha 225 hp carbed two stroke and it was not underpowered. Top speed was 41 mph. I think you will see the same top speed with the four-stroke, but it will take longer to get there. My only complaint about the boat was maneuvering at low speeds. Between the engine bracket and the bow pulpit, the boat is very long, but most of the superstructure (including the hardtop) is located in the forward area. If there is a crosswind, it will often throw the boat off course, which is a pain when docking. I owned a 22 ft. center console (no bracket or pulpit) after that boat, and there was no comparison in terms of docking. Also, since the Marina charged by the measured foot, the 24 ft. Grady's overall length meant a lot more money than the 22 footer.

i was told the same thing by an ex-grady salesman. said docking will be tough, but will get used to it in time. always fun to learn new tricks.

As for the docking thing, nice to have a "walkaround" just for that reason! Get anywhere on the boat real quick, none of that "climbing through the windshield" thing.

The guy I bought mine from sold it to buy an Albin with a bow thruster, cause mines a "straight inboard". Manuvering can be a bit tricky, but I knew I was destined for a mooring anyways so........

If it's not a "dime a dozen" boat, I guess owners are less likely to negotiate much, especially with the nice weather finally being here!!!

Keep us posted matt.......

well, deal is made! new boat! he shot down my inital offer and set his bottom line price. luckily, i'm good at these things and got him down more. i think i got a great deal without screwing him. of course dependent on water test, but i'm staying positive. man i can't wait to get this thing in the water and cruising the bay.

thanks for all the support and help, means a lot and really assisted me in my decision making process. i'll fill ya in on the water test when it happens.

again, thanks to everyone that replied.

Grady White has probably the best resale value of any hull on the market.. 'Wish I was shopping for one. You can't go wrong with a Yamaha either.

Re: 1994 Grady White 246G w/ Yamy repower

I found my recall notice. I can't seem to find this anywhere on www.yamaha-motor.com so I'll quote the important stuff. "A possible condition which relates to safety may exist in certain 2002 through 2005 model F225, LF225, F200 and LF200 outboat motors. There may be excessive friction in the ball joints of the throttle link rods. This friction could prevent the throttle return springs from returning the throttle linkage all the way to the idle position. If this happens, the throttle may stay at a fast idle speed that could prevent the operator from shifting the remote control into neutral unless the engine is shut off. If you have a 2002-2004 outboard, you may have recieved another letter dated sept 17, 03 about a fast idle condition. The safety recall announced now is different from that earlier campaign." This is close to word for word for ya.
I just had both of mine done, the dealer said that the parts are on back order for those who didn't get it in early. I have a 2003 wellcraft 290 coastal. It weighs in at around 9k dry and the twin yamaha 225s push it along just fine..cruising at 31-32mph 18gph and toped out at 43mph and approx 35gph. I think the engines are great and would recommend them. You seem to have a very nice set up..a lot of boat, great power and not a lot of down side...good luck.
