Good Day, Long time reader first time posting.

So I'm replacing my 1981 Evinrude 90 that has 2 very shot pistons with a new to me 1994 Johnson 100 :) I was actually able to pick up 2 for $2000 so I have a full on parts motor. I got the old Motor off and the new motor on relatively easily(relatively) and started hooking everything up when alas, the tilt trim wiring for the old motor doesn't match up with the new one. Same number of wires, same colors but different connector. (the old motors relay box was in the boat, the new motors relay box is on the motor) I could have hooked up the tilt trim to the old box, but nothing a $22 trip to the marina didn't fix. The tech at the marina was even nice enough to lend me his weatherpack tools. So first time wiring a weatherpack connector went quick and smooth, plug the tilt and trim in and "click" but nothing. try a few more times, same click from the relay yet still nothing. Try switching relays, nothing, try the relays from the old motor which i know work, nothing., just clicks on all the relays!.

Drive the tools back to the Marina where helpful tech tells me to hook a battery directly to the tilt motor wires to see if it works then go from there. Sounds simple enough(i've never jumped a motor wire before). Get home, try grounding the battery to the block and touching the positive to the motor connector and... nothing :( try this several other times on both newer motors and my old tilt and trim which i know works all with the same result :(. finally break down and research how to jump the tilt motor and discover i'm an idiot and should have been connecting the ground and positive to the tilt motor wires. success! tilt motor works both forward and reverse! do this again on old motor and other new motor for sh**ts and giggles, Success all around!

Next step, try to figure out if the wiring between the relay and the motor is broken. manually tilt motor up,(undid manual hydraulic screw but still frickin heavy) found a green wire with the ring broken off. Change that. hook boosters to motor because i'm tired of pulling the battery in and out of the boat and "click" mother f***** piece of S*** motor!!!!! ok. now what?

Getting pretty good at connecting the battery directly to stuff and jumping other wires at this point so i try hooking the battery up to the parts motor. push the button and up goes the trim. push other button and down goes the trim, over and over just because it works and seems so easy! so i take the tilt relay(wiring) box off of parts motor and install it on new motor even taking the time to install the new motors relays back onto parts motor. hook up battery to new motor and... "click" Damnit! try hooking battery up to parts motor and "whir" motor tilts! *@#$**** so now what?.......

Ok. Roll parts motor over right beside new motor, unhook connectors from relay box to tilt motor, hook new motors tilt up to parts motor relay connectors, jump the green ground wire because it won't reach, reconnect battery to parts motor and press trim button on parts motor "whir" new motors tilt goes up, then down with the corresponding button presses on the parts motor! So all the wires from the relay connector to the trim motor work. The relay box works because I now know they both work. try reversing everything, connecting the tilt trim from parts motor to relay box connector on new motor. jump the green wire again because they aren't long enough, connect battery to new motor, cross fingers and..."click" @##$%^^&&!
Study parts motor while pondering why it's the one on the stand and not the one on the boat(lower compression) can't find any obvious differences between it and the new motor. No extra wires that would explain the problem.

try unhooking remote from new motor, disconnect battery cables, anything else that is different from parts motor. reconnect trim connections to trim relay box on the new motor, reassemble tilt trim connections on parts motor to keep it organized. Hook battery back up to new motor and "click" #@$%%@@$!!!!!!!

So it's now 7:45pm, I've been fighting with this for 8 hours and my kid wants to cuddle before bed time so off I go for the night. I Read more about tilt and trim while my kid is watching cartoons, can't find anything useful beyond relays and checking the tilt motor. Give up for the night and have wonderful dreams about spraying brake cleaner all over my new motor and lighting a match :)

New day, new approach. So I know all the parts of my Tilt work from the relay box on. maybe the switch? take the switch off parts motor, plug it into new motor, hook up battery and... "click" hmmph. reinstall switch on parts motor.

Now I know all the individual pieces of the system work from the switch to the motor. I know the whole outboard gets power because the starter kicks when i turn the key. I know the battery has power because I checked it a couple times!

Time to start looking for loose grounds on the rest of the motor? Pull out service manual from 1981 evinrude. (new motor manual hasn't arrived yet) look at tilt trim electrical diagram, find 1 sentence about relay not having enough current. go back into garage, start looking for incorrectly placed wires. Check the parts motor bus bar. Start checking all the wires match on new motor. Get 4 wires down on new motor and notice a slight wiggle. Take my flathead screwdriver and tighten the screw 1/4 turn. hook up battery, push switch and..."WHIRRR!" tilt moves. up, down, over and over!!!Unscrew loose wires to clean the connections while grinning like an idiot. replaced one corroded ring terminal and everything now works fine!

10 hours of hassle for 1/4 turn of a screw on a bus bar!

Thanks for reading and I hope this helps someone else! this forum has been tons of help in the past and wanted to return the favor. Check the connections on the bus bar!!
