1994 johnson 25 estart not charging

Is this motor supposed to charge the battery as its running because when it was running it on a hose i unhooked it from the battery to see if it was charging with a test light and it wasnt.

Why you unhooked the battery, while running, is beyond me-NOT GOOD.:facepalm:

At minimum, you popped the Rectifier.

Check charging voltage with a VOLT Meter across the battery terminals, while running.

... another case for having AND reading an OEM shop manual before messing with a motor. The book is way less than a new rectifier.

well i just replaced the battery because i just bought the boat and it had a cheep walmart car battery in it that went bad and i think this is what messed up the rectifier. The motor runs great and i went on a three day trip without killing the battery running a cmc t&t, running lights and a spotlight. the motor hasn't been charging since i bought it so im guessing its the rectifier. I couldn't imagine running the motor when its unhooked from the battery would hurt anything but if it was already hurt i guess i couldn't hurt it any more. Should be the rectifier right?
