My 60hp Johnson has a brand new water pump and vernatherm but the overheat alarm goes off at WOT and when I put my hand on the top of the motor it's not hot. Some one suggested I clean out the passages between the cylinders as bubbles can occur and cause this problem. What new parts,(i.e gaskets etc.) or tools will I need to do this job. I suppose it could also be the temp sensor and I'll change that after I clean these passageways out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you sure that you are not hearing a fuel restriction warning? Will pumping the primer bulb stop the buzzer?

If in fact you are not overheating, it may very well be the heat sensor acting up as you stated, which is easily tested.

Re: 1994 Johnson 60 hp overheat alarm

Since I had already put in a new water pump, I removed the cylinder head to check for obstructions between cylinders. All was very clean. The horn alarm goes on solid so I think it is an overheat problem and not oil or gas. I removed the overheat sensor and it closes at 206 degrees and opens at 170. So it seems to work as it should. Are there other things I am missing here with this problem?

I hope someone can. Because I am having the exact same issue. 1988 88 SPL, V4.

PLEASE PLEASE follow up if you have any progress. People tend to leave the grand finally out. I will post to this thread with anything I can find.

Are you under the impression that the alarm makes a different sound for a fuel/oil problem? Have you tried to prime the bulb when the alarm goes off?
