I have a 1994 johnson 88 on my bayliner and want to hook up the tach and need to run the tach wire lead. Does anyone know what wire to tap into on the engine to get my tach lead or where i can find a diagram on line to look at? Thanks

On these later model control boxes there should be a tach accessory connector (plug) next to the throttle friction knob on the lower end of the control box. That connector is made to adapt to OMC tachometers. That plug will have a three wire output: Grey, black and red/pink. The grey is the signal, black ground and pink is hot. There is a wiring diagram in the back of the factory service manual.

Hooked it all up and the tach works but does not read right. It is reading 4000 rpm just off an idle and I know that isn't right. Is there an adjustment on the tach or is the tach bad? I am running an ariginal tach out of a bayliner that had an 3.0 omc I/O. same year boat as mine. Are the tachs not the same?

I think the I/O tach and an outboard tach are different. The outboard tach counts pulses from the stator. The I/O tach probably counts coil or ignition signals. See if there is a place to adjust the signal input on the back of the tach.

Check your PM's, I have a tach if you need one.

Most marine type tachs have an adjustable setting on the back so that they will work on various stern drives as well as assorted outboards. Check the back of the tack. The adjustment arrow should be set on the number 6 for your engine.
