Hi, I pulled the carb off my 94 9.9 tonight, pretty strange carb, at least to me. Couple questions, #1 I can't believe it but I broke the nipple off the primer solenoid, but I see it has another one next to it that is capped off, can I jb weld the broke one shut and tap into the other one? #2 in the picture you can see this small black plastic thing, looks to be a jet of some kind, its a cylinder shaped piece with a square hole through it ,laying horizontal, it only rotates slightly, can this be removed so I can place carb body in chemical dip bucket? #3 there seems to be only one adjustable jet on this carb, it goes in the top plastic plate, in the gold piece in the pic. I've never ran this motor, but this jet was 4 full turns from being snug, does that seem like a good starting point? Thank you for any help , Ryan

Oh yea, one more question, before I removed the carb, I opened the throttle linkage all the way up, and the butterfly only rotates about 45 degrees, the initial movement is the timing only, which I believe is normal but by the time its wot the butterfly should be horizontal , right? Thanks

Re: 1994 Johnson 9.9 Carb questions

Hi again, I would really like to get this carb soaking, does anybody at least know the answer for #2, pertaining to that black plastic piece? I really don't want to break it, or soak it with that thing in there. Thank you. Ryan

Not sure if I'm looking at the right part in the part diagram but it looks like the plastic piece is a restrictor cap. Have you tried to gently pry up on it to see if it is threaded or pressed in? Does the piece rotate? I understand your impatience to dunk it. Why not tie a wire around that piece and submerge all but the plastic part. Are you sure of the HP? I don't see a 9.9 only 10HP.

Re: 1994 Johnson 9.9 Carb questions

Hi thanks for the response, it only rotates slightly then gets harder, I havnt tried prying up on it in fear of breaking it, but that might be my next step. That's a good idea on tying wire around it, but I'm not sure how far down it goes if it is an actual jet. That makes sense that it may be a cap. The cowl says 9.9 I can get the serial # in a bit. Thanks again Ryan

That plastic piece needs to come out. Keep turning it, and if it doesn't spin out then gently pry it out. Not sure which nipple you are talking about can you post a clear picture of it? The only adjustable screw/needle goes into the top plastic piece. Should be more like 1-1.5 turns out. It is the idle speed jet. Sometimes when the carb gets gummed up people open that joker up to allow more fuel in, since the gum is restricting the flow of fuel. And it's a 9.9hp Jim a 10. Although the serial for these 9.9s actually says J10 or E10.

did you have the gear selector in fwd when you checked the throttle plate at wot?..if not, it'll only rotate so far in neutral

Hello, no I did not have it in gear, that makes sense though, no reason to blow it up in neutral. Thank you, Ryan

Re: 1994 Johnson 9.9 Carb questions

Yes those 2 small nipples on #4, one is broke off, I assume they have 2 for the twin carb models? Epoxy the broke one closed and tap into the other? Thanks, Ryan

Well, if it is easy to tap into go for it. I broke one of those off recently as well. Pulled the small hose off and it yanked it right out. Only issue for me is I need both. Tried to JB weld it (because it is gas resistant) and no luck. Then I got some gas/oil resistant epoxy, put a piece of wire through the nipple to hold it tight, and epoxied it back on. If I were you Id block the hole like you said and tap into the other one. When I need to order parts off the site again I will just order a new enrichner plate(and I suggest the same for you.)

So then, yes. If it is in neutral what you need to do is adjust you plate stop. There is a screw that if you turn will allow your carb butterfly to open even farther. It should be horizontal.
