Re: 1994 mercury 150 wont start

How are you doing merctech. for the stator, I had come up with a part # 398-9710 from outboardparts.com and part# 3582-710-398-832075A4 from discountboatparts.com, are these just diferent makes. where did you get the number and where can it be ordered from in the event that mine is bad.? I'm going to recheck all my readings and try to get a DVA to do it with, and also try to get the tools to take a look at my stator. One more thing on the part # you gave me, is it a 389-9710a45 or 398-9710a45. ?

The pn for stator should be 398-9710A33, black stator, 16 amps. This info for 125hp, 4 cylinder, Mercury srial number OG301751-OG40416, from service manual, 90-830234R3 dated Dec 1997. Stator output at 300 rpms low speed side from blue switch termial to ground is 160-200 with DVA meter, high speed side red switch box termial to ground 8- 10 volts with DAV meter

Re: 1994 mercury 150 wont start

chumbucket,
the bias circut only applies to 6 cyl. engines with to switch boxes and timing advance or idle stabilizer moduals. bias voltage is measured on the white/black wire on the switchbox. advance/idle mods. ground the voltage of this wire to control timing retard and advance. when a switchbox is totally grounded internally on the wht/blk circut the timing will advance beyond limits, possibly causing detonation. because the switchbox bias voltage circut is connected between both boxes one or both could be the cause of low bias voltage, this is why mercury recommends replacing them in pairs, especailly if the engine is equipped with the high speed advance modual.
hope this helps.

Re: 1994 mercury 150 wont start

Thanks for the feedback.
I checked with a Mercurypartsexpress.com distributer in San Antonio to ask about part # 398-9710A45 but they said this part was NLA, that I should use a red stator kit # 398-832075A8 but I cant belive the price!!!. Clanton, do you know if the part # 398-9710A33 is still available ? By the way my engine serial # is OG039265 125hp 4 cylinder, would this make a diferance in part number ?
While calling around, I came up with a CDI part # 174-9710k1, I'd prefer using the original parts if possible but how does this other brand of part compare with the mercury parts.
thanks for helping.

Re: 1994 mercury 150 wont start

I finaly made the tools to get to my stator, and the number on it is 398-9710A31 but I'm told that this is NLA and that mercury subs this with a red stator kit which is very expensive. Does someone out there know if the original part, number above, can still be found somewhere. Also I checked a cross reference to CDI and came up with part number 174-9710K1, in the event that this would be my only option how well do these parts perform in place of the original ones.?

Re: 1994 mercury 150 wont start

Stator question: original ststor # 398-9710A31 is NLA Mercury recomends a red stator kit # 398-832075A8 that costs an arm and a leg.The cdi# is 174-9710K1 which is much reasonable, my question is how do these replacement parts work in place of the original one. Ive checked all the postings related to this problem but found nothing. I'll appriciate any advice. Thanks
