I bought a 1994 skeeter bay last year and found out that the stringers were bad and floors are rotted. I found a guy online who is reinstalling the stringers and glassing them in with wood and putting in new floors all for 1000 bucs. This is a 21' boat and is not an easy project. He says 500 for material and he charges 15/hr. Its amazing I found such an honest guy who is just trying to make a living. Anyway, I would like to paint the entire inside of the boat after he is done. He is not redoing the front and back deck. The paint on there now is chipping and flaking all over, especially along the corners/edges. I want to know what is the proper way to do this. I am guessing I have to sand the entire inside of the boat, run some resin on the edges where it is flaking, and then hit it with some marine paint. I like the splatter paint effect and was thinking of trying that. Is this something easy to do?? Am I missing some important steps?? Thanks for replies!!

hi....welcome to iboats....

lol.... i have fear running all thru me about this post....

yep....your missing a few things....

but first of all.....we need pics of the boat......and where you plan to paint.

1000 bux for a stringer deck replacement is really really cheap....so cheap.....i would be very suspect of procedures.

id suggest that you read her.....read lots.....then you will be better suited to ask him questions about how he plans to tackel the job.
500 for materials on deck and stingers is very very little money.

on a 21 footer, you are talking about over 50 yards of glass alone...the stuff is 5 bux a yard. and the resin needed is 125 for a 5 gallon pail.
he needs 2 or three.
now we have to talk about the rest of the stuff, grinding discs, rollers, acetone....ect ect.

Here are the photos of the work before he lays the floors. He basically ran a board along the bottom of the stringers and glassed them in. Said the person who tried before did a very bad job and my stringers were not glassed to the the hull and instead were just laying in there barely hanging on. I just don't understand why the board he put in don't go all the way to the front or end of the stringer. He is not touching the front deck or back deck. Just putting new floors from back deck to the front deck. What you think???

Are those old stringers that he left in and just ran new ones alongside of them?

Sorry but I think you just got taken for a $1000 bucs. Underneath it all your stringers are still wet and rotting away.

Id say from the carpentry and glasswork he should be qualified to put in the deck, but those stringers would not fly in my boat. the old ones need to come out completely or rot will just start in the new ones. The new stringers he put in aren't going up all the way to your deck height, so your new deck could even have a spongy feeling to it. Im not going to say you got took just yet, but i would go over a few things with the guy before he goes any further

Could these old stringers possibly be foam stringers??? If they are this for could be okay, oops i think you could be the man to answer this

Actually he thinks they are foam stringers. We poked through the foam and found nothing but pvc pipe which was plumbing for wires. And the stringers are fine, but he is tying them into the hull with new stringers and glassing it all in. He said who ever did it before did not prep it good and just laid glass in at the bottom edge of the stringer and the glass came right up. So my stringers were ok but nothing was holding them down to the hull. This guy is a contractor (carpenter, drywall, etc) and he knows his ****. But he is trying to work with me bc I told him I didnt want to spend/invest a lot of money into a boat I don't even like. I told him I wanted to spend around 800. SO he is just doing the stringers and floors from back deck to front deck. He is good and I trust him. BUt he did recommend that I do the ENTIRE boat from bow to transom, but it would be way too expensive. Im not looking to break the bank. I just assume go buy a boat I actually want, like a deep v kenner. He says the boat is much more sturdy now, which is all I wanted. I just wanted to check with you guys to see what yall think?? He also took all the foam out which was water logged and changed all rotten wood. You guys are bursting my bubble here!!! I just want a boat that is safe to go out in and catch some fish!! Thats all.

Not the way most of us would do it..... But it looks like a fairly good patch job....

I would go the extra nut and foam the hull.... should stiffen it up even more and it won't sink to the bottom....

Yeah i would have to agree now that i know these old strings are foam stringers. Take ricky's advice and spend 200 bucks to foam it, its worth the added security
