I have a 94 rangertrail single axel trailer with the grease hubs and 'm trying to figure out how to repack regrease the bearings. Boat is a 481 vs if that matters with Brakes.

I've taken off the wheel and even have a needle fitting about 6" long that i attempt to hold against the spindle and force grease thru the back of the bearing and aout the front. As i've been told by Ranger.

I have got to think there's a better way, either something on my trailer is askew or this needle thing is for the birds.

Does this thing screw into the spindle and go 6" into it?

Or am i supposed to believe your supposed to remove the key pin and hold 2 fingers over the pin holes while someone else pumps grease into it?

I just dont have enought hands.

I called Ranger and Curtis said what i have is what i need and to just hold pressure on it, or replace the female fittings in the spindle with new tap in ones.

What gives ?

I also have a 1994 Ranger Trail trailer that has this same design. They should shoot the engineer that came up with this design. You have to jack up the trailer, remove the wheels, and dust hub caps. You then take a needle adapter and hook it to your grease gun. You then have to be very careful not to bend/break the needle while inserting it into the center of the hub and pumping the grease in. Most of the time, the end of the needle adapter blows off from the rest of its assembly and you start all over again. I have given up and just take it to the Ranger dealer to get them greased. Lousy design for such an expensive, top of the line boat/trailer.
Good luck!!

Colonel, as RD says, you have to just get the needle inside the center of the hub an inch or so. It is a pain, but putting the needle in the center hole forces new grease out at the back bearing and out of the hub thru the front bearing, assuring that both bearings are properly greased.

The good part is that if you check the back axle seals and seal the dust cap with a little silicon, you don't have to do it very often.. I have gone over a year with zero water contamination on my 95 Ranger Trail hubs.

Re: 1994 Trailer Greasin

I have yet to try this, but will soon. The mechanic at the local marine shop who greased my trailer bearings last summer says he uses a chain saw grease gun. He directed me to the local True Value hardware store where I purchased one of these. It is just a small grease gun with a pointed end to it. He says you just pack it with bearing grease and firmly hold it up against the center part where you are supposed to insert the needle and pump some grease in. Like I said, I will be trying it soon and will let you all know if it worked. Ranger still has a bad design here and should be ashamed of it.
