I have a 1995 150 looper. I was runninig yesterday at 4200 rps. Engine temp was OK @160; Water pressure ~ 25 psi. I use VRO fuel pump replaced with latest version two years ago and I just replaced the plugs. (Champion - correct plug)

Was coming back in after about a 60 mile trip and one engine went from 4200 RPM and dropped rapidly. I shut her down immediately. Tried to restart and nothing. Im thinking siezed? Check the oil tank 1/2 full. I had disconnected the level switch several years ago as it falses all the time.
I pulled off the engine cover and felt the heads on the flat spot and they were equally hot. A two second touch was pushing it but you could hold your finger on them.

The engine alarms are all functional and I'm very aware of them. Engine did not go into SLOW - it just slowly lost power and quit.

I tried to start it again and it fired but you could tell it wasn't running "right" - but no bad noises.

After running it 15 miles back in when I get to the dock I notice a definite tapping sound - its still running poorly- stalling at idle and not up to power.

So I check the compression with warm engines and throttle wide open. Per my manual

port-stbd - from rear
70-105
78-102
100-102

Reading the plugs -

dry & black - lt brown with a sheen
dry & black - lt brown with a sheen
lt brown with a sheen - lt brown with a sheen

Accurate examples of my plugs can be found:

Sorry for the looooong post but I wanted to provide as much info as possible.

So with the above information - where do I start??? - Besides here:)

Thank you all for your much needed assistance!

The scratches in the top and middle are small but can feel them with your finger. Bottom is smooth as can be.

Whats next?

Thank you!

Rebuilding a 1993 150 at this time. All three cylinders on the port side were scored.
The only thing I could find was the carb flanges were leaking on that side. This would give rise to weak mixture and poor lubrication. Your two low comp' cylinders are scored. Time for reboring those two. Measuring and inspection will determine if a hone and re-ring will suffice for the other four. Check the crankshaft bearings, little ends and pistons for serviceability.

Gosh that sounds expensive! Any clue how much?

Should I be looking for a new powerhead?

I guess that was the last thing to go wrong in 08' Good riddance!

Richard, it really depends on if you can do it your self. and you don't know the full extent of the damage until it is apart. you can price suspect parts here http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

then decide on whether to rebuild or get a short block, or full power head.

V6 rebuilt powerhead around here cost $3K plus. Average $3500.
Doing it yourself might cost $200 for the machine work plus a couple of pistons and other parts might be approx $600 total. Maybe $1000 at the high end of the scale.

James R, what is a `carb flange`? Would it be the gasket?

Re: 1995 150- Compression help

$1000-$1500 I can handle. Finding a good machine shop in Naples Fl may be a bigger issue. I've rebuilt carbs and changed reed valves so I guess this is just a step deeper. ...

If anyone can make a recommendation for a machine shop in the Naples/Ft.Myers area I'd really appriciate it.
