Been running it for two seasons like this. Runs great all day long starts quick ect. How do I lower the idle speed?. Idles at about 950 in gear about 1050 to 1100 in neutral. Don't care for the way it bumps into gear (to fast) and would like the boat to move slower for docking and slow trolling. I have adjusted the control cables but the issue is on the engine not the controls. Thanks.

Good thing it has a shift interupter switch or you'd never get it out of gear. Anyway, start with a sync & link to make sure all the butterflies are closed. Follow all the procedures in the manual step by step in order.

Yes OIS. Yes again on having the control cables disconnected.I will check the roller and recheck the linc and sync. The butterflies were all closed last I looked but will recheck. To retard the timing is it just a matter of moving the inside detent tab to the right? or is it to the left? I moved it to the left and the idle did not decrease .The motor ran a bit more on the rough side though.Should I have moved it to the right?

If it operates thru the range properly beyond idle I would look for an air or fuel leak, pressurize the system with the bulb and use a flashlight to look for wet hoses at all connections from the bulb to the carbs.
Gaskets around carbs and manifold gaskets. Slight air leaks will cause a lean idle which speeds it up. Make sure primer solenoid isn't leaking, air will be drawn in if fuel leaks out.

A timing light on the timing wheel will show if its double firing, match the spark plug wire number to the number that flashes on the wheel, don't point it at the optical sensor. I doubt thats the problem but I like to eliminate it.

You will need a timing light to ensure the timing is set properly at idle.
6deg ATDC.

If the idle timing is within a degree I would look for air leaks.
If its a carb seal problem you can try putting 2 fingers in each throat to see if idle calms down, thats the problem carb if it does.

Suggest you spend the $50 on a factory service book too, it will help you immensely. I think these guys have it. Best money you will spend on it.

Was just thinkin...

Disconnect the port temp sensor at the bullet connector whilst its idling high, just to see if its stuck in quick-start.

All good suggestions.I do have an OEM manual it has been an immense help. However I do not have the tools and test equipment need for a total timing and linc and sysnc. However I have had my issues trying to figure some issues out. I like the suggestion about grounding out the temp switch to check the quick start . My tan and black wire coming out of the harness have been clipped prior to my ownership of this motor. When the tan wire going to the temp switch is grounded, no horn. The horn sounds at low idle, sometimes although it is never hot and pumps plenty of water. Apparently I need to figure out my tan and black wires . Can not figure it out even though I follow the schematic in the manual. Have posted regarding my alarm issues previously. I have been using the motor like this for two years now. I recently replaced the powerpack due to a high speed miss, that issue is solved. The alarm and the high idle have been bugging me though. I would like to solve the issues . Perhaps they are both related to the clipped wires.

" tan and black wire coming out of the harness have been clipped "

Which harness, under the hood or at the throttle end?

Black wire with brown stripe is just for the tilt guage, I cut mine too.
I actually used that wire to run my temperature guage.

Theres also a brown wire with black stripe from the stator to the PP but I doubt its that, it would have a serious running problem otherwise.

There are ways around needing the factory boxes for testing the ignition.
A DVA meter is usefull. And a timing light is cheap to buy.

Have you checked the yellow red wire for voltage while the engine is idling high? there should only be v when the starter is activated, if you find voltage when its idling in the yellow/red wire then its stuck in quickStart.

But if you look at the troubleshooting section of the manual its more likely to be an air leak. Pressurize the bulb and use a flashlight to find leaks.
I find it easier to look on a dark day than in direct strong sunlight.

Yes I get the beep when I turn the ignition on. Yes again on the harness under the hood.I will check the yellow red wire for voltage. Also want to ground the bullet connector to the temp switch to see about the quick start. I plan to pull the lower cowling to follow the wires. What has me curious is the wires going to the temp switches. When grounded the horn does not sound. I recently installed a new power pack but the same situation was there with the previous power pack. I purchased a new OEM power pack so I doubt my troubles are power pack related. Its got me going. I would just like to be certain my warning features are operating correctly.

The wire from the power pack to the temp switch should sound the horn if its grounded to the block, if yes... then theres a break in the temp switch wire somewhere or maybe the blocking diode is burnt out.

All the warning switches use the same circuit, they are isolated by diodes , look at the circuit diagram in your manual.

They use the wrong elec sign for diode, it looks like a resistor with one band at the end but it a diode.

Use a meter and check the wiring from one temp switch to the other.
The port side feeds back to the PP and the other switch terminates by ground to the block so theres just a single wire on that side.

I don't know where the diodes are hidden, someplace in the harness?

Re: 1995 150 EXEOM Idles to fast.

Grounding the tan wire from the temp switch end after disconnecting does nothing; it's the other end that runs to the main harness that should be grounded to test the horn (with the ignition switch on, of course).

Same with the black and white wire running to the powerpack; when it's disconnected, grounding the powerpack end is what disables quickstart.

There should be no voltage on the red and yellow wire leading to the OIS unless the starter is engaged (ignition switch in start position).

Thanks for the replies. I realize which end of the bullet connectors to ground . I grounded the pwer pack side and the horn does not sound. I too have thought of the blocking diodes but did not see or recognize them in the harness. Where is it? Also if the diode is bad, would that cause the temp switch to be inoperable thence causing the engine to stay in quick start? I know this thread has gone from fast idle questions to alarm questions and am curious about them being inter related perhaps one and the same issue.

The tan wire leading to the powerpack has nothing to do with the warning horn; that part of the tan wiring is for S.L.O.W.

OK. Anyone know about the blocking diodes?

OK. Anyone know about the blocking diodes?

In the last document that I have showing that diode location, it is located 5-1/2" from the engine side, back edge of the large red plug, in the harness.

You don't have to dig it out to test it though, just use your ohmmeter - you should get a reading in one direction and none in the other.

So Ohmmeter from temp switch power pack side bullet connector to the tan wire in the red plug (of the harness)is how to check the blocking diode?
