Runs fine after first start of the day, but the cold start takes many cranks.
Batteries Ok. New plugs. Replaced fuel filter and water separator. Will check spark and compression in the spring, but believed to be ok.
I prime the bulb, push key in and turn hoding key in, engine cranks for a bit but refuses to turn over until after 6-8 tries.
Do my carbs need cleaning or what?
Thank you for your responses.

You may have a fauly enrichment valve.

How would the enrichment valve keep the engine from turning over? Sounds more like a battery/starter prob.

I think he meant it wouldn't fire, not turn over. Otherwise his statement above is impossible. To me, cranking and turning over are the same thing.

Re: 1995 175 HP Cold Start

Thanks for the quick responses. Yes, it cranks, but the firing/ignition takes a few tries. The solenoid on the enrichment valve does click and I will check that fuel flows from it in the spring. I am assuming the valve is working fine, but we'll see. Thanks for the help.
I am wondering if I am not working the right 'magic' to the choke to get it to start quickly or if there is a real problem.

Re: 1995 175 HP Cold Start

Here's my "procedure":
1. Level engine, not tucked under, not trimmed up.
2. pump primer bulb till firm.
3. Advance throttle (high idle) lever about half way.
4. Turn on ignition.
5. Hold key in to prime for 5 to 10 seconds, depending on weather.
6. While holding in key, crank till it fires.
7. Bump key if it tries to stall in the first few seconds.
8. Idle down to 1500 rpm
9. Watch the engine for cooling tell-tale (warmed up)
10. Idle down, and get underway.

Once warm, it usually starts instantly with no dance at all. If it's been awhile, I might have to advance the idle lever, and prime (choke) it for a second or 2.

When I first got my XR4, I was frustrated trying to start it. I checked it out mechanically and there was no reason for trouble. I decided to experiment and observe the results, and developed my dance. It may be a little different with different motors.

hope it helps
John

I don't think my procedure varies too much from yours, but it helps to have a known good. I could be missing one of the steps. I will give it a try in the spring.
Thank you so much.

Maybe yours needs 6 - 11 seconds.:D

Don, my dad always said it the same way and I often do too. You all knew what he meant, why be so danged critical..

Why don't you go back and read WHY I posted what I did. I was repling to ENSIGN's comment.

Re: 1995 175 HP Cold Start

There has been a lot of posts about this lately and I had the problem myself. I replaced my enrichener solenoid and it came back to a normal 5 second prime.

As a side note, open the throtte to much and you begin to negate the effect of the enrichener.

There is another trick and that's to adjust the throttle stop so that it just barely raises the throttle plates (just about .0015) and then reset the preload on your throttle cable. You then adjust the initial timing to give you 800 rpm on the hose which will be about 700 in the water.

That trick is not according to the book for link and synch but neither are today's fuels.
