Anyone have an idea what would cause reverse to not engage all of the sudden. Sometimes it will engage but it makes a loud clanking sound. This sound occurs once I shift the motor from neutral to reverse. Everything was fine when I unloaded the boat and I went to back up from the dock and this occured and lasted the rest of the day. Thanks in advance for any advice.

At the dock or on the trailer with the hose, disconnect the shift cable and manually shift the motor to see if the gearbox is shifting correctly.

A stretched/worn shift cable will not push/pull the shift linkage quite far enough for both gears to fully engage.

I will check that Charlie. Jerry I have no problems with forward. Reverse is the problem. I checked when I got home from the lake and the prop spins in neutral, turns one direction in forward, and barely moves either direction in reverse. This was done with the motor off of course. I am going to check the linkage today.

Check the oil.Drain it and see if there are any chunks or metal shavings.
Nothing holding up the linkage?Nothing binding?J
