I bought a 225hp 1995 evinrude motor on a 21' Charger fishing boat. I have taken it to 2 different marina at about 600.00 a trip to tune and rebuild carbs. The problem I am having is it will not come out of the hole without first running the RPM up to about 800 and giving it full throtle. If it is below or above 800 it will die. I have repalced the pump up bulb and fuel filter. I have also purched a new SELCO manuel. One thing I have noticed when taking off the cover there is a 1/4" hose located at the bottom of the crancase that has a brass 90* fitting on it with a screen in it. This is not connected to anything and I can not find in the manual where it goes.I have decarbed changed plugs, check compression. It runs fine when it comes up on plane. Can anyone help me!

Could that fitting be a recirculation valve??
Look for them in your manual.

I have looked in the Manual can not find it. There is a large hose above this one on the port side there is also one about the same size 1/4" on the port side at the bottom this one come off the front with a 90* fitting and is only about 6 " long.

Well, I haven't worked much with big motors like a 225, so some of the other more knowledgable people on this forum will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that 800 RPM is about as low as you would want for Idle anyways, my 70 likes about 900 RPM for an idle. I think that perhaps picking up the idle speed a little would be all you would need to solve the problem, and as for what Walker said, Yeah thats what it sounds like to me too.

When it dies, does it "sneeze"?

Those engines sucked alot of reed gaskets...

Naturally, the carbs gotta come off again to know...

I had IDENTICAL symptoms on 1999 200HP Johnson. Had to rebuild three carbs. Didn't want to believe three carbs at one time. Must have been a bad load of gas. Added a high end filter in line before I even started it again.

Son-in-law had a similar problem two years back on an old 175. Re-did carbs, and symptom came back. Carbs were crapped up again. Put a high end filter in line, and held up until this year before similar symptoms came back again, but this time carbs were clean. Eventually we gave up and took it to the man. Two coils, and it would keep running, but still not correct. Took it back - A third coil and away she went.

I have also replaced the power pack. Since I have repaced the Bulb and inline filter I have not had it back on the water. I have also bought a smaller pitch prop thought it might help. I will try it again on the water before changing anything else then go back to carbs and reed valve gaskets. Rabidfish you ask if it sneezed before it died I don't think so it just act like it did not have enough fuel. When it is out of gear the engine runs up fine. The repair shop I have taken it to only tried it in a test tank. I don't think they were under load.

Thanks for all the help. It appears the prop was the problem. It runs great now. Not sure if it was prop filter or pump up bulb. But it is running great now.
Johntree
