I just bought a used set up - a welded aluminum boat with a 25 HP 2 stroke Johnson outboard. Previous owner said he bought the engine used about 4 years ago and it had reasonably low hours on it when he bought it, and he's put 20-30 hours on it per year since. He says the engine has been extremely reliable in the time he has owned it. After talking to him a while and considering he also posts on a fishing discussion site I also post on local to myself, I feel I have reason to trust him. I just started the motor today and she seems to run good. Reasonably quiet for a 2 stroke and idles well.
Anyways, a few questions:
1) Previous owner said he removed the oil injection system and has just been pre-mixing it and it's worked fine that way ever since he did it. I didn't ask him what he has been pre-mixing it at but the gas he left in the tank definately has oil in it so I'm gonna huck a guess out there that it's probably 50:1 - any ideas (also going to call him to ask)? I am going to run Amsoil HP Injector 2 stroke oil which is safe for pre-mix or oil injection applications and it meets TC-W3.
2) I'm going to change the leg oil but I can't find any spec's about the leg oil in the owners manual I have. I was hoping to switch to Amsoil Marine Synthetic Gear lube which works for 75w90 or 80w90 applications (I'm a big fan of synthetics by the way).
3) Any known issues or points about the particular engine I have?
Thanks.
