Last week I got a new 1995 Lowe boat with 1995 30HP Evinrude (E30ELE0B) motor. I had a friend who works on motors run it before I purchased and he thought it was in great condition.
I took it out a couple times for a short 30 minute rides last week just to check it out and it worked perfectly even at full throttle.
Yesterday I took my wife and son out on it and we went about 1/2 throttle for awhile, then we went at trolling speed while going through a no wake zone, then we headed back (about 30 minutes into the motor running) and when I increased the throttle speed to about 3/4 it felt like it slipped out of gear a couple times, then the alarm buzzer went off and it shut down. Fortunately we were only about 20 yards from shore so I paddled us over there. I called my friend and he said to let it cool down for about 30 minutes and then it should start up again. He thought it might be overheating and one of the spark plugs would shut down (if I remember right) which would give the "slipping out of gear" feeling. He said it might need a new water pump - Yet I saw water coming out of the pee hole at a nice steady stream.
We waited about 30 minutes, I turned the key and the alarm still buzzed, so we waited some more. At about 45 minutes I got the "beep" and turned the key and it started! We headed back for the dock at trolling speed because I didn't want to take any chances going faster. It was about a 10 to 15 minute ride back to the dock. On the way back I saw a steady stream of water coming from the pee hole in the bottom of the motor. I also noticed a small bit of smoke near the water line and below the top of the transom. I'm not sure if it was just exhaust or steam from something overheating. I didn't think to touch the shaft to see if it was hot.
So before I spend a load of money I thought I would ask here and see what you people might think is going on.
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.
