I have twin 5.7 litre 4bbl mercruisers. My port side trim motor quit working, it would not go up nor down. Traced problem to a thermal overload called a short-stop that is in line between the hot side of the high amp wire on the starter and the trim motor solenoids. The "short stop" was corroded badly and not allowing any current to flow to the solenoids. The wire is about 8 guage stranded. THe "short stop" is screwed down to the stringers. Merc does not show this part. Both engines are wired this way. I have tried cotacting Larson dealers, but none have been able to help me. A "mechanic" told me to cut off the crimp terminals, and butt the wires togther and eliminate the "short stop". I really don't like the idea of removing a fuse/breaker from a circuit without knowing exactly what it was protecting. Any thoughts or has anyone ran into a similar situation?
