Engine has been only used 4 or 5 times a year, has been great. Was used about a month ago with no problems. When cranked (at lake), sounded kinda strange but seemed to work ok. After running for a while developed a loud clicking noise which changes with RPM. Runs and starts fine. I noticed oil/gas in the bottom of the engine cover, don't remember that before.
Any help?
thanks

Re: 1995 40HP Loud Clicking in Engine

If you are sure it is coming from the motor and not the lower unit. Does it do it in neutral, forward and reverse? If you idle alot or use slow speed you will see the gas oil on the motor leg you described. This is normal. If you are sure it is coming from the motor you may want to get the compression tested. It could be piston slap but you usually hear that only at start up. Maybe one of your magnets is coming loose on the flywheel. I am not sure if there is anyway to test this without removing the flywheel.

If it were a auto engine, it sounds like a lifter or valve. I have ordered a manual. I looked at the plugs and they look normal. I had idled a ways back to dock after the noise. Any other help is appreciated.
