1995 40hp mariner dies in gear

A friend from work asked me where the fuel filter is located on his 1995 40hp 2 stroke 4 cylinder mariner. This is all the info. I have. I know the model or serial number would help but I dont have those either. Do these engines have fuel filters? I have had some older nissan and johnson motors that didnt have one built in from factory. Unless they were inline and taken off at some point..I did ask him if his fuel bulb stayed hard and he said no and I told him it was probably his fuel pump. Any help is appreciated,thanks.

Filter should be inline between the fuel pump and carb. It is usually living behind the oil tank, almost sitting on top of the top carb.
