1995 88hp Evinrude Tilt/Trim Won't Shut Off?

I have a 95' 88 hp. Evinrude which is in pristine condition. After using it for the first time this year, a short while after it was sitting on the trailer in the down position I heard a noise coming from the Tilt/Trim motor. The noise was the motor was on even though the engine was fully down. The only two ways I could shut the motor off was to push the trim switch in the upward position (the motor would stop) but as soon as I let the switch go the motor would start up again. The only other way to shut the motor off was to
disconnect the battery cables.

Any suggestions???

I'd say your switch was bad.

Any chance some water could have got into the switch? Any more trim switches on the boat (at the transom or maybe a bow switch panel)?

Thanks for your input. I removed the switch on the engine cowling today, tested it on my Volt/Ohm meter, it appears to be alright. I re-installed new barrel connectors, sprayed the switch level gauge device above the TT motor with CRC 6-56, seems to have done the trick..........I hope?

I would replace that switch. Odds are it will short out again and you may not be around when it does. Could easily fry your tilt motor.

Good point! The cowling switch is an easy change out, the TT level switch above the TT motor I have followed the wires into the power pack and I have no idea where thos two wires dissappear! (wht/brn and black).

Thanks for the reccomendation, I'll take another looksie!
