The engine starts and runs fine usually. Cruising at about 3500rpm it will hesitate briefly like its not getting enough gas or losing spark. Once in a while it will cut off, but start right back up. Lately it has been getting worse. I checked for air leaks in the fuel line, took apart and remated electrical connectors and changed spark plugs. The plugs are oily and it seems to use more oil than 1 gallon per 50 gallons of gas. The gas is clean, I have an external filter. WOT on this engine is only 5000rpm. I am not sure where to turn or what to do next. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Howdy, Popov.

Sounds like fuel starvation.

Fuel tank vent restricted?
Fuel tank pickup restricted?
Bad valve in fuel tank outlet or primer bulb?
Failing fuel pump?

Let us know what you find. :)

Does it get worse at higher rpm's? What does it do if you run at WOT for a few minutes??

-John

Check the power pack and sensor. I see a lot of these engines that top coil arcs to steel plate between the coil and power pack.

The increased oil consumption could be related to your drivability problem. If there is an air leak or a fuel restriction in the fuel system, the decreased volume of fuel pumped will still get a full charge of oil.

Use a clear piece of fuel line at the engine filter inlet, Tee'd off with a vacuum gauge. Run the boat at all speeds and look for air bubbles in the line and make sure the vacuum reading is around 3"Hg, and not over 4". If you have a high reading or air bubbles, start inspecting the fuel system.

Clanton,
You were right. It was the power pack and optical sensor. I replaced them both, and the engine runs fine. Now I need to work on the oil consumption problem. Thanks for everyones suggestions.
