TS - That's a nice precision engine rebuilding hatchet you got there.

haha...precision tool indeed.. I used that to seat the lower main bearing, wrapped the head of the hatchet in shop rags and lightly tapped it into place.

I read a post way back on here about heating the lower main in the oven at 120c for a few minutes. That worked wonders for me, slipped right on with a little encouragment from the old hatchet:)

Got the powerhead back from my mechanic, ignition and fuel systems installed and tested.

Installing powerhead on to mid section.

Powerhead bolted on and lower cowlings in place. (Starting to look like an outboard again...woo hoo!

Time to install the leg.

Leg went on easily, set the shifter into reverse and slightly rotated the prop to seat the drive shaft into crank. (No I didn't paint the skeg that awful colour)

Ready for first startup! Finally!

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

And the results...

Well, she started right up and purred like a lion. :D

Couple of issues, first the primer leaked gas when I pushed the key in; tightened that up, problem solved.

Second, after she idled for about a minute, the thermostat opened and it started leaking water out the exaust cover. I stopped the motor and grabbed my torq wrench.

Sure enough one of the bolts near the leak turned easily..very easily in fact. The bolt was broken! So I got my drill and a grabIT bit and removed the broken bolt. Replaced it with a fresh one and re-torqed the whole exaust cover.

Started her up again, fired up in 1 second, but again after a minute leaked from the same area and others. I guess now I will have to drop the lower cowling and remove that exaust cover and replace the gasket again.

Side note..this engine smokes like heck with a 25:1 fuel mix. Vro has been disabled.

Thanks BK, it's been a fun project. If the only set back is replacing the exaust cover gasket I will be very happy.

The weather has been mild here lately...I'm hoping to take her out for the break in process this weekend if all goes well.

BTW nice paint job on that 9.9..if you're ever out here on the west coast this 70 could use a touch up!:D

New gasket in place on the exaust cover and no more leaks. Ran the engine in a test tank for 1 hr, throttle varied between 650rpm and 1200 rpm.

Cooling system working great, engine never got too hot to touch the block during this test. Strong stream from the tell tale.

Pulled the plugs and checked them after the 1hr and all were clean with a light coating of fuel/oil. Tested compression 125psi in all 3 cylinders.

Now for the water break in, going to try and take her out tomorrow.

I Have a 1990 60 horse that I am currently building, glad I found your post. suppose to receive my pistons, bearings and wirst pins this coming week, nice to see the finished product. Like yours I only paid 300 for the motor, including water pump machine work and carb kits I have 800 total. Good job on the rebuild.

Hey dearl, glad to hear this post helped you out in some way. It's a big job for the backyard mechanic like myself. You should start your own thread and post pics of your progress on the 60hp. Lots of folks on here to help you out if you run into any issues.

Cheers.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Decided to put this project on hold for now as the parts I need are now more than the motor is worth. (About $2500 after tax including a used crankshaft I found). If I were to send this crank one out to be repaired it would only be about $300 cheaper.

When I find a used powerhead that I can tear down for parts I'll look at rebuilding this one.

Thanks for your advice!

Is everything that costly up north? By that I mean I picked up a 1990 70hp that needed a new trim relay box and the swivel shaft loosened up for 300.00. Engine runs great. Just looked awlful from the saltwater barncles. Also last year I got a 1976 Johnson 70 that looked brand new, (well okay, the cowl needs a paint job and decals but rest looked brand new) it had a bad starter seloiend and badly gummed up carbs. I paid 225.00 for that engine. No tilt and trim on the 76 though.

It just seems to me, that with todays economy, you can find engines fairly cheaply that just need a minor repair to be put back on line. I know on ebay, many sellers are saying they make more money stripping a running engine down for parts then trying to sell the entire engine

Anyway Just a thought.
JSB

P.S. I guess in keeping with the sprit of the forum, I should list my motors:
1973 115 Evinrude
1976 70 Johnson
1990 70 Evinrude
1986 4.5 Evinrude

And a old 402 mercury that I keep hidden in the back

Yep, for the most part we pay more up here than you do in the US. There are deals to be had, don't get me wrong, but we pay a lot of taxes and duty on anything imported from the states.

Sure, I could've waited around for another 95 70hp to pop up for sale used and salvaged from that but I wanted to rebuild this one myself. Not only for a winter project but so that I would have a completely rebuilt motor to put on my boat for this coming season.

I paid about $2300 CDN all told for this motor. Includes all parts, labor, machining, initial purchase of the motor, controls and cables. That's pretty good in any market.

Check out http://www.outboardexchange.com/70_evinrude/ . They sell these outboards, rebuilt for 4100 USD. Not sure if that includes cables and controls.

Cheers!

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Quick update: Just passed the 25 hour mark and the motor is running excellent. I've finished with the 25:1 fuel and have moved on to a 40:1 mix. I will run 40:1 for the next few tanks then finally 50:1.

Compression test today:

#1 135psi
#2 139psi
#3 136psi

So compression has come up quite a bit since my first test of 125psi in all cyl. I retorqed the head bolts, examine the spark plugs and checked all the wiring and connections.

My plan is at the 50 hour mark to replace the spark plugs, gear oil, fuel filter and impeller. After that she's ready for the summer:)
