This weekend I took my boat to a local lake, and it ran great the whole time.

Immediately after leaving the lake on Sunday, we headed to the coast and fished monday all day, with no trouble.

Tuesday, while fishing and about to move, I tried to start the engine up and just got a 'click-click, buzzz'. I know for a fact the battery is fine, it's got plenty of juice to power the rest of the accessories on the boat, but the starter wouldn't turn. The tilt/trim was working, so I thought at first it was the starter. So, I got the pull cord out and started it, and we were on our way. While planing out, I tried to trim the engine, and now the trim wasn't working? Weird..
I leave it as it is, and get to the next spot...we fish for a while and are ready to move again. Just for grins, I turn the key, and it starts right up?!?! Trim works, everything's good.

Park again, fish a little longer, and try to move. No starter, no tilt/trim, and now when I press the tilt/trim button, my overheat buzzer sounds.(the one that chirps when you start the engine to let you know it's working). I also noticed that when I hold the tilt/trim button in place, the tach will read gradually lower, the longer I hold the switch down.

The engine still runs great, I just dont have trim or a starter.

The only other problem I've been having is this:
While idling for more then 30sec. to a minute, the engine starves of fuel. I have to prime the bulb, or it will die. I dont think this is electrical related though...and I'm making a seperate post for this.

If you have any ideas, please let me know. First thing I'm going to do is check the terminals on my battery on/off switch, and then look at the wiring under my binnacle throttle controls.

Thanks in advance!

ShawnQ,

Follow the negative battery cable from the battery to where it grounds on the engine block. REMOVE that ground COMPLETELY , clean it and reinstall.

^^^

Wouldn't be a bad idea to check them all. May be a bad connection somewhere.

DJ,

I'll give that a shot. What can/should I spray on the terminals to keep them clean? It appears that there is some type of black spray on the battery on/off switch terminals...

Any other ideas? I did remove the battery and the battery on/off switch when I put the durabak in my boat. I also removed the gas tank from under the console which may have tugged on a few wires...I mainly just want to find a place to 'start' searching.

Did I mention I hate electrical gremlins?!?!?!

Thanks!
Shawn

ShawnQ,

Shawn,

There are many items that you can use on connections, most available at auto parts stores. Plus, there is always paint or liquid electrical tape.

The thing about that block ground is that it looks just fine, UNTIL you take it apart. I have had two crossflow V-4's (such as yours) that pulled that little stunt on me. Symptoms were identical to yours.

Good luck, let us know.

hello
yep
I think shawn is trying to tell you to remove the ground stud as well. I have had many that did just what you describe and all it was was corrosion on the threads where the stud screws into the block. somewhere your losing the battery connections, the horn self tested cause the circuits in the horn "thought" the key switch had been turned back on.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt,

Let's hope that is all it is!

I haven't bought a manual for this engine yet (haven't needed one), but I may invest in one now.

I shouldn't have any trouble figuring it out once I dig into it. I know it can't be anything like a power pack or anything crucial because if I pull start the engine, it runs like a champ, just without tilt/trim.

I plan to dig into it tomorrow, and I will definitely post the results.

Thanks!
Shawn

Well,

I think I've got it figured out!

I tore the cowling off of the engine today...and visually inspected all of the main power supply bolts and connections, and they all looked good. I scratched my head a little bit, got a cold one (sweet tea that is), and decided to start from the beginning.

I've got two batteries, both run through my 'on-off' switch. So, I disconnected the on-off switch, and ran the power directly from the battery to the engine, bypassing the on-off switch. Went to the tilt/trim switch, voila! It worked! Bumped the ignition switch, voila! It worked also!

So, I tore the on-off switch off the boat, cleaned it up, cleaned the posts, and the wire terminals, and reinstalled it. Works like new!

What's funny is that the terminals were all coated with a black film (some type of coating the previous owner applied I assume). So, they all looked clean. As soon as a scraped some of the black film off, I noticed corrosion underneath of it. Guess that stuff was pointless! Either that, or there was a missed spot.

So, I figured it out on my first try...thank god it wasn't something pricey or tedious, or I would've pulled my hair out!

I've had a good day...I also figured out my fuel starvation issue if you've been following that thread...

Take care, thanks for the tips!

Shawn
