Well, a small problem has turned into a big one. First motor wouldn't shift into reverse. Now it won't shift into forward either. It will shift just fine in the driveway (running or off) but in the water it just makes some bad noises when I try to shift. Any suggestions? The shift cable looks to be adjusted properly but maybe stretched a bit (torward the end of it's adjusting limit).

Thanks,

Well, since no one has answered: I am not sure when the lower unit was changed from Force design to Mercury design. So, if you will look at the lower unit and see if it has six 1/2 inch head bolts under the cavitation plate (anti-ventilation plate) --then it is Force design. Then I may be able to help you.

And BTW: If you have Mercury cables, they have a black plastic cylinder held into a receiver on the engine end by a plate. there are plastic sleeves over the black cylinders. If the sleeves are missing, then there will be too much slop in the cables. If the plate is broken or missing, the cables will pop out of the receiver and will not function.
