How's it going guys? I have not posted in a while, but here is my story. I have a 1995 Force 90 HP on a 2002 KW 1720DC. Initially it ran fine then lost some power and RPMs. You guys told me to do a compression check and put in a fuel pump replacement kit. I did all the above. Last week I took it out to the lake and the battery died on me. I put in a new battery this weekend and this morning it would not start. It started to turn over then the drive assembly started skipping on the teeth. Not sure what you call that part? Do you think my starter is bad? I don't want to start replacing good parts to find the problem and I am no outboard expert. I have not been able to get on the water since I put the fuel pump replacement kit in. Thanks for any help!

Re: 1995 Force 90HP Starter?

You could try lubeing the starter drive temporarily with WD40.
If you note how it rotates to ingage the flywheel you can see where to lube.
WD40 is temporary as it drys out but a quick wat to see if lube is a probem.
Some other easy to apply lube that doesn't dry out should solve the problem.
Be sure all connections are clean and tight from battery to starter.Don't forget all the grounds.

Usually the bendix bouncing against the flywheel teeth indicates a starter motor not turning fast enough. May be something as simple as the wingnuts on the battery terminals not making good contact. I like to put a stainless lock washer in each side of the wire terminal. They bite into the battery terminal, wire terminal, and wing nut to assure good contact. Also check the solenoid and starter terminals. You may have worn brushes inside the starter motor--not a major job to replace.

You will not be stuck on the water if you carry a stout lenght of cord WITH a handle. That engine can be pull started with the key in the on position once you prime it
