I have one of these that is starting to run a little rough, nothing too serious yet. 2 different mechanics with no axe to gring told me that they rebuild a lot of these vintage motors, more than older ones or later ones. The motor has been well cared for, and the last thing I was planning on is a rebuild....any exerience/expertise welcome and appreciated.
Thanks,
-Nick

Along with proper care it must be set up correctly. For a long healthy life it must be propped out correctly (lug it and it will die quickly), use the correct fuel and oil and use Champion plugs.

If all this is done then you should expect several thousand hours of use.

Good luck!

Nick,

Dhadley is absolutely correct. Most engines die from neglect and misuse, not by wear.

I second his recommendations on: good fuel, good oil, regular decarb., and prop it correctly.

Champion plugs are a must too.

Thanks, which plug # do you suggest? If I'm running at 4k on a plane, would that be harmful? less than ideal?

Nick,

Not sure about the spoecific plug for that engine.

The cruise rpm is not that important. 4K sounds OK.

The important rpm to be aware of is the top (wide open) rpm. As long as that is on the upper end of the recommended range, you're OK. I believe that would be somewhere around 5500.

I like to prop those out at 5800 to 6000. I have always had good luck with that style (93 and newer closed deck) motor.

Good luck!
