1995 JOHNSON 8HP J8REOD - Tell Tale starts good then peters out

My 1995 8HP Johnson Starts and runs ... tell tale is strong then after 20 - 40 seconds it starts to slow down then stop.
I shut off the engine .... restart and tell tale starts again but does not last as long

Every time it starts the tell tale starts then peters out ... I have blown out the tube.

Where should I be looking ?

If the head gaskets starts to leak the exhaust can enter the water passages and over power the water pump.

I am not sure when the impeller was last replaced .... this is the 2nd year I have had it.

Replace the impeller, and check the compression if you have a gauge.

^^+1. Is it hot to the touch (top of head)? Normal temp is 120-140F or so. Your motor has a thermostat up at the top, and that may need replacement as well -- salt water motors often more often than fresh water. If you replace the head gasket, first resurface the head cover using wet/dry sandpaper on a hard flat surface.
