hey guys...i was out running my boat last night at WOT and the thing skipped once....and then about 30 seconds later it dropped from 5200RPM's to 3000RPM's and then eventually stalled. I tried again the next day and the same thing happened, except I was able to adjust the throttle up and down, but it would only go to about 2500 at WOT. Then it stalles out if you bring it below about 7/8 throttle. What do you think's the problem? Thanks.

Hi Cap.....

First thing to do is take compression tests and spark test. This is to make sure all the cylinders are tight and that you havn't lost spark to any. Sometimes it's hard to tell when you've lost a cylinder on the big engines. Only way is to watch the tach.

Inspect the plugs for any water that may be gettin into any of the cylinders. This will cause you woes you are experienceing. Water will appear as little dropplets on the plugs. A compression test may tell you if the head gasket is blown. Compression readings should be within 10% of each other.

Hows the fuel system? All connections tight? Check the primer bulb for bad valves.

Did you get any type of warning alarms? May want to make sure the engine is not overheating.

Keep us posted to your progress.

If its been hard to start the last few times. The cd box is the most common failure on that engine. Next would be a stator. Look for black goo dripping from stator.

Hey guys, no black goo dripping from stator, the cd box and stator are a week old, I don't think that's the problem. The fuel system was just re-done too...everythings tight and theres no leaks...almost sounds like air bubbles are getting in somehow with the skipping? and also the spark is good and the compression is good too....so.what do ya think?

Hey,

When you say the "fuel system was redone"...was the vro fuel pump just replaced? What kind of boat/fuel tank do you have? What I'm getting at is that is sounds like the motor is be starved for fuel. Recheck all fuel lines, primer bulb, and fittings. Are you premixing your fuel/oil or are you still using the vro as intended? If you are premixing have you plugged the appropriate oil lines. The vro may be sucking air from the oil side of the pump. Troubleshoot the fuel supply system first.

Good Luck!

Yes, the VRO pump was just replaced. I'm using the VRO as intended...I'm not premixing. And I've just replaced all fuel lines and the primer bulb. I have a Wellcraft 240 Coastal, with a 99 gallon tank. The idea of air getting sucked in through the oil system sounds like a possibility, but how do I checK?

OK
I know maybe this sounds too simple. And far less technical then the other guys answers. But did you check under the prop for fishing line? That stuff gets wound around the shaft it will surely bog you down.

check fuel pick up in tank. sounds like dirty fuel. suck up fuel from the very bottom of tank.
